Minimalist travel is a fantastic concept and one that we are big fans of here at The Ultimate Backpack. It’s a way to get the most out of your adventures, move quick, freely and live in the moment.
We also love it because to us the ultimate backpack is one that both carries and organises your valuable possessions…. A vital part of minimalist travelling.
Before we start, to do minimalist travel well you need to be organised. You will need to know where you’re going and what the climate is like.
Our Top 10 Hacks to Master Minimalist Travelling
Once you have that worked out, take the time and write down a detailed list of all the items you are going to need for that place.
We modify this depending on where we’re going, but here’s our general go-to gear list when packing light for adventures.
What to Pack!
The Backpack
Firstly and to us the most important, find a backpack that is comfortable for you and allows you to be well organised.
Tip: Backpacks are not one size fits all. There are some fantastic backpacks designed for the different body shapes of men and women.
Ideally, we suggest using a backpack between 30 and 40L. This will provide enough space to carry the essentials, fit into overhead while not being too bulky and cumbersome.
The bag needs to be well padded, comfortable and ideally have a combination of main storage compartments, organisational pockets and zippered areas. We love travelling with a laptop so it needs a padded laptop backpack, but that’s just personal preference… you might not need that.
Shirts, Pants and Shorts
This is a very personal decision and one that is dependent on the temperature of the locations that you are travelling to.
For me, I like to take at least one pair of pants where ever I’m travelling too. Even if it’s summer some places the temp can drop pretty quickly at night.
In terms of shirts and shorts, I usually run with around 3-4 shirts and 2 pairs of shorts (including pair 1 pair of board shorts for swimming). This is pretty lightweight and provides enough clothing for a few days before the set need washing.
A Jacket
A high-quality rain jacket is a must for me as it provides wind and rain protection if you’re caught in a shower. It’s also a great all-season item and it easily allows you to layer up underneath if the weather is a bit cooler.
Toiletries
It is important to keep toiletries simple. Look to carry a toothbrush, soap bar and deodorant and that’s about it. Depending on where you’re travelling, but insect spray and aqua ear can be very useful.
Shoes
Look to take shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits, can be folded up easily and are durable.
Socks
I usually carry 2-3 pairs of small socks… nothing fancy
Towel
If you are going to be staying in a number of hostels, a towel is a vital piece of equipment. Look to use a travel microfibre towel as it will be lightweight and fold right down.
Other misc. items to include
- Belt
- Hat
Pro Tips
- Roll your clothes. It’s a great way to reduce space, keep them wrinkle-free and well organised. I’ve also sometimes used elastic bands to hold them in their rolled shape.
- Fold your large items
- Stay organised throughout the trip
