Once you try minimalist travel it’s hard to go back, it gives you a sense of freedom, a stress-free holiday that will be unforgettable.
Here at The Ulitmate Backpack, we love it, but to do it right however it takes care, organisation and some good old fashioned planning upfront!
Here are our Top 10 Hacks to Master Minimalist Travelling
1. Make Lists
It’s important to start with the most important, get organised and make some lists. We recommend making 2 lists.
Number 1, list out all the items you want to take. Make sure they are applicable to the environment you’re travelling to and map it out first.
Review and refine that list, go through every item to ensure each possession is necessary and fit for purpose. If you can replace 2 items with one more versatile then do it.
If you can replace cumbersome items with more compact ones then we recommend doing that also.

Number 2, make a list of all the jobs that you need to do before leaving. Minimalism is life. Leaving for a trip can be stressful, try and alleviate this by getting organised and mapping out everything you need to do beforehand.
Prioritise and execute, start with the most important items on your list, prioritise those, get them done and then move on.
Pro Tip:
Don’t forget to include what you’ll be wearing when travelling in your travel gear list.
Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in packing your bag that you forget to prioritise what you will likely be wearing.
Just like with your packed items, analyse what you’ll be wearing to ensure it is fit for purpose, comfortable and can be stored in your pack when you change clothes.
2. Pack Versatile Multipurpose Items
Minimalism is doing more with less, so it makes sense to travel with as many multipurpose items as possible.
Examples of these could be a multi-layer jacket, Shoes that can be worn in multiple situations, shorts that can be used for swimming, the list is endless.

3. Only Pack Essential Toiletries
Only pack the essential toiletries, you will be travelling so you won’t need everything.
Everyone travels differently and that’s ok, but just be aware of where you are going and what you will need. Less is more.
4. Prioritise your Digital Devices
This is an important one for me and very reliant on where you’re going. I always take a smartphone with me these days as most people do. I ensure I have one with a good enough camera so that I don’t need to carry a camera as well.
Laptops are something I sometimes travel with and sometimes don’t. Most of my backpacks are laptop backpacks [link], so I just use the padded sleeve for other items when not in use.
5. Pick the Right Backpack
This is a big one and no doubt where we can help. The right backpack is different for everyone and potentially every trip.
TIP: Don’t get caught out with style here, a minimalist backpack is very different in our opinion to a minimalist travel backpack.
A minimalist backpack is simple, sleek, clean, (often black) and the bare minimum… A minimalist travelling backpack however is fit for purpose, it enables you to go on minimalist travel adventures and is the ultimate tool to carry and organise your items.
It ideally should be around 30-40L in capacity, so that it can carry enough yet still make carry on luggage.
It should be well organized, have large main compartments for clothing, and multiple small pockets to organize your items. It also needs to allow easy access so that you can quickly find all your gear.
A minimalist travelling backpack is the ultimate one to help you carry and organise all your valuable possessions.
6. Stay Comfortable
If you like me and like travelling around with the same pack, then comfort is a big factor. A lot of quality backpacks on the market come with clever airflow back padding systems, these provide excellent comfort while still allowing your back to breathe.
7. Stay Organised
This is one of the quality traits of seasoned minimalist travellers. The ability to stay organized throughout your trip. For me, I need to prioritise this as it becomes very easy to stop folding clothes, stop putting items in their place when you’re out and about.
Stay organized and travel with be easy.
Pro Tips
- Roll your clothes. It’s a great way to reduce space, keep them wrinkle-free and well organised. I’ve also sometimes used elastic bands to hold them in their rolled shape.
- Fold your large items
- Stay organised throughout the trip
- Pack snacks
- If possible, unpack as much as possible when you get to your accommodation.
Find a Minimalist Travel Backpack
With organisation being such an important part of successful minimalist travel, a good quality backpack is key!
But don’t be fooled by good marketing. A minimalist backpack is a lot different to a minimalist travel backpack!
A minimalist backpack is sleek and simple, whereas a minimalist travel backpack allows you to be organised and travel simply.
Look for a backpack that has a number of main compartments and are loaded with lots of internal pockets for storing your individual items.
These styles of backpacks are also commonly fitted with mesh dividers to help you nicely separate your clothes.
Other features to look for are high contrast internal linings to allow you to easily identify your gear.
These days there seems to be a backpack for everything, it can be overwhelming trying to find which bag is right for you right now.
