Is Polyester Waterproof?
Polyester is a very popular synthetic material used for making water-resistant products, such as outdoor clothing and backpacks. It’s a relatively cheap material, that is strong and tear resistant.
So is polyester waterproof or even water resistant?
The short answer is yes and no.
If we look at polyester as a solid material then it is waterproof (technically it’s very slightly hygroscopic and will absorb a small amount of water on a molecular level).
Polyester as a fabric, is not waterproof. While the threads themselves won’t absorb water like organic threads (cotton and wool), water will pass through the gaps between the threads, making the material not waterproof.
Polyester fabric on its own is a semi-hydrophobic material which means it is slightly water repellant. It will initially repel water and cause it to bead on its surface, for example in a light rain shower. However during heavier and persistent rain, polyester fabric will allow water to pass through the tiny air gaps between the fibres.
While it is extremely expensive and time-consuming to make polyester fabric completely waterproof, it is relatively easy to make the material water resistant.
One way to achieve a desirable level of water resistance is to increase the thread count of the polyester, this reduces the size of the air gaps between the threads and restricts the amount of water that can pass through.
For example, 100d (thread count) polyester has poor water resistance, whereas 600d polyester will provide a higher level of resistance before it begins to absorb water.
The other popular way to improve the waterproofing or water resistance of polyester is to apply an external coating to the material. This coating is applied to the external surface of the fabric and fills in the air gaps between the threads – causing the material to resist water.
This is the process used for the majority of outdoor clothing and water-resistant backpacks made of polyester.
So, is polyester fabric waterproof? The answer is no, but it is one of the most popular materials used to make water-resistant products.
So if you are looking to purchase a waterproof or water resistant backpack made of polyester, or if you want to know whether your current polyester backpack is waterproof, check that the material has had a waterproof coating.
Just because it’s made of polyester doesn’t necessarily mean it’s waterproof or water resistant.
