There are different types of travel bags for every occasion. I have written articles about the best carry-on backpacks and the best carry-on suitcases, as well as the best under seat luggage. But there’s another travel bag type I haven’t written about yet – it’s duffel bags. So let’s now talk about the best duffel bags for travel!
If you are new to traveling choosing the best luggage for your trip might be a bit of a challenge. Before going on a trip you need to understand what type of bag would be the best choice for you. If it’s a backpacking trip choose a durable travel backpack like Osprey Farpoint 40 (see it on Amazon). If you are going on a luxury holiday and will be traveling only from the airport to the hotel in a taxi, then a roller suitcase will be the best choice for you.
If you are going on an adventure and are taking a lot of gear with you then you have several options. Depending on the type of adventure you are embarking on. If you will do a lot of hiking on your own and without the use of any transport then still the best option will be a good quality backpack.
But if you are traveling by car, consider buying a durable high-quality duffel bag.
Both regular and travel duffel bags are a good choice for a weekend travel or a short trip when a suitcase will seem too heavy and impractical. A duffel bag is more lighter than a suitcase and it’s easier to carry, especially when it’s not fully loaded. Some of the best duffel bags for travel can even be stored in their own stuff sack when not in use. Which is great as it will save space in your hotel closet.
In this article I will not only tell you about the best travel duffel bags available now, but we will also look into duffel bag basics and how to choose one for yourself.

Duffel Bag Basics
In general, there are 2 types of duffel bags: regular and travel duffel bags. Regular duffel bags are perfect for the gym and short trips, for example, weekend trips. But travel duffel bags are more durable travel bags with features that a regular duffel bag won’t have.
All of the best travel duffels bags feature:
- Not only top grab handles but also comfortable and adjustable shoulder strap.
- Padded and durable top grab handles that also are used as backpack straps when the bag is used in a backpack mode.
- Durable side grab handles that make it easy to take the bag off the luggage carousel.
- Large zippered compartment, often with a U-shaped opening.
- Organizational pockets.
- Lockable zippers.
- Compression straps on each side help to decrease the depth of the bag.
- Heavy duty lash points that allow you tie the bag down to a roof rack.
- Some travel duffel bags can also have wheels and a retractable handle.
Regular Duffel Bag vs Travel Duffel Bag
Regular duffel bags are not as durable as travel duffel bags, and they usually are smaller in size. They don’t have such useful features as travel duffel bags (see above). Another drawback is that a regular duffel bag can’t be worn comfortably in a backpack mode because the top handles usually are not padded well enough.
The fabric of a regular duffel bag often is not water and tear-resistant.
How to Find the Best Travel Duffel Bag for Yourself?
Before buying a travel duffel bag, consider these things:
What are your requirements? Where are you going and how are you planning to get there? Are you taking some heavy travel gear with you?
Or are you going on a short trip to a neighboring city or country?
Think about your ongoing trip and choose between a travel duffel bag or a regular duffel.
If you have chosen to buy a travel duffel bag, note that there are several types of them as well. Some travel duffel bags feature wheels and a retractable handle. Those are great for frequent travelers, and they have the functionality of a suitcase. These features will make it way easier to carry it around in airports, bus and railway stations. Then there are travel duffels that can be worn as a backpack, too. Others, however, can only be carried in your hand or over the shoulder.
If you are going on a holiday and you know for sure that you’ll travel back with another bag full of souvenirs, consider buying a packable duffel bag! It can be folded and packed inside itself. When packed it doesn’t take up much space. Put it in your suitcase and use it when needed – on your way back!
Where are you going? For how long? What kind of an adventure you are embarking on? How much gear are you taking with you?
Most travel duffel bags are available in several sizes. Starting from a carry-on-friendly size up to a huge capacity of over 130 liters!
When choosing a duffel bag pay attention to bag’s material. Is it rip-stop? Is it water resistant? Is it durable? Does it have a rubbery coating? The latter means that a bag is even more water resistant and even more durable.
4. Pockets and Compartments
Most travel duffel bags have a u-shaped, zippered openings to the main compartment. It is very convenient, since you have easy access to just about everything in your bag.
I recommend you to buy a duffel bag that has at least a couple of organizational inside pockets where valuables, documents or other small items can be stored.
Side pockets for gear or dirty laundry is a good feature to have, too.
5. Straps, Handles, and Other Features
Pay attention to what kind of straps and handles the bag has. If you plan to use the duffel bag in a backpack mode check if the top grab handles (that are shoulder straps in a backpack mode) have padding.
Would you like to have a single duffel over-the-shoulder strap, too? Choose a bag that has both – a single long shoulder strap and top grab handles that can be used as shoulder straps when using the bag in a backpack mode.
Check if the bag has side grab handles. They will make it easy to take the bag off the luggage carousel.
Locking zippers will help your bag stay safe. However, you’ll have to buy a luggage lock, as usually it’s not included.
Compression straps are useful, too. They help to decrease the depth of the bag. And stuff sack is a cool extra. If you have it you can store your duffel bag when it’s not in use. Thus it will take up less space in your closet.
Do you plan to attach your new duffel bag to a roof rack of a car? Then check if it has lash points.
Best Duffel Bags for Travel: Best Backpack Duffel Bag for Travel – Reviews
1. Osprey Transporter Travel Duffel Bag Reviews
The Osprey Transporter bags are among the best duffel bags for travel. They are very durable and are made of top-notch material.
The bags are made of water-resistant synthetic fabric, with a cute bright lime green lining that looks really good.
This bag is ideal both for adventure travelers and business travelers. As it is very durable it will carry heavy adventure gear just perfectly. The smallest Osprey Transporter (40 liter) is carry on friendly yet roomy enough to hold a change of clothes, toiletries, shoes, and a laptop with a room to spare.
The Osprey Transporter is very easy to handle and carry. There are side handles that make it easy to take it off the luggage carousel or pull out of an overhead compartment if it’s a 40-liter version.
It can be used also as a backpack. When you want to carry it in your hand just put the backpack straps together with a Velcro flap. The standard duffel bag shoulder strap is not included but you can buy one separately.
The bag has 3 exterior compartments / pockets, and a zippered mesh pocket inside. The main compartment has a U-shaped top opening which is great because it is large and gives you easy access to all corners of the duffel.
There’s a flat pocket on the lid of the main compartment. It’s completely concealed (against your back) when the bag is carried in the backpack mode.
The flat lid pocket is the pocket where the duffel bag packs away into. Store it there when the bag is not being used to save space in your closet!
There’s a shoe compartment on the side of the bag and a zippered side pocket with a key hook.
Even though the bag has shoulder straps it’s not the most comfortable bag to take with you on a serious hiking trip, as it doesn’t have a hip belt and a fully padded hardback.
Sizes and dimensions:
S (40 liter) – 21” x 13” x 8” (53.3 x 33 x 20.3 cm).
M (65 liter) – 24” x 17” x 12” (61 x 30.5 x 43.2 cm).

The North Face Base Camp duffel bag is one of the best expedition travel bags available! It’s available in several sizes and will suit the needs of many adventure travelers!
The North Face Base Camp duffel bags are weather resistant which means they will withstand rain and other natural elements (to a point).
The bags are made of 1000D phthalate-free TPE fabric laminate which is a strong and durable material. Texture of this material is kind of rubbery. Zippers of the bag are chunky and durable, and hardware – strong. It’s a duffel bag that is going to last long, and will be perfect for carrying heavy adventure equipment.
There are several compartments. The main compartment is very roomy, and has a weather-resistant zipper flap, and a mesh pocket on this flap. In addition to the main compartment, there’s a zippered compartment on one end (the XS and S bags don’t have it, though). It will allow you to separate your wet clothes and dirty shoes from the rest.
There’s a mesh sleeve pocket for additional organization, as well.
The XS and S size bags have a small zippered side pocket for small items, like, keys, cables, etc.
When carried on the back as a backpack the lid of the main compartment is against your back, and thus the opening of the main compartment is concealed.
Adjustable alpine-cut shoulder straps have been updated for a more ergonomic fit. There are handles on each side of the duffel bag. They serve as both duffel carry handles and haul handles. Note, that there’s no regular (long) duffel shoulder strap.
Compression straps on each side help to decrease the depth of the bag. There’s a water-resistant ID pocket on top of the bag.
