Duffel Bag Basics

In general, there are 2 types of duffel bags: regular and travel duffel bags. Regular duffel bags are perfect for the gym and short trips, for example, weekend trips. But travel duffel bags are more durable travel bags with features that a regular duffel bag won’t have.

Regular Duffel Bag vs Travel Duffel Bag

Regular duffel bags are not as durable as travel duffel bags, and they usually are smaller in size. They don’t have such useful features as travel duffel bags (see above). 1. Type

What are your requirements? Where are you going and how are you planning to get there? Are you taking some heavy travel gear with you?

If you have chosen to buy a travel duffel bag, note that there are several types of them as well. Some travel duffel bags feature wheels and a retractable handle. Those are great for frequent travelers, and they have the functionality of a suitcase. These features will make it way easier to carry it around in airports, bus and railway stations. Then there are travel duffels that can be worn as a backpack, too. Others, however, can only be carried in your hand or over the shoulder.

If you are going on a holiday and you know for sure that you’ll travel back with another bag full of souvenirs, consider buying a packable duffel bag! It can be folded and packed inside itself. When packed it doesn’t take up much space. Put it in your suitcase and use it when needed – on your way back!

2. Size

Where are you going? For how long? What kind of an adventure you are embarking on? How much gear are you taking with you?

Most travel duffel bags are available in several sizes. Starting from a carry-on-friendly size up to a huge capacity of over 130 liters!

3. Material

When choosing a duffel bag pay attention to bag’s material. Is it rip-stop? Is it water resistant? Is it durable? Does it have a rubbery coating? The latter means that a bag is even more water resistant and even more durable.

Most travel duffel bags have a u-shaped, zippered openings to the main compartment. It is very convenient, since you have easy access to just about everything in your bag.

5. Straps, Handles, and Other Features

Pay attention to what kind of straps and handles the bag has. If you plan to use the duffel bag in a backpack mode check if the top grab handles (that are shoulder straps in a backpack mode) have padding.

Would you like to have a single duffel over-the-shoulder strap, too? Choose a bag that has both – a single long shoulder strap and top grab handles that can be used as shoulder straps when using the bag in a backpack mode.

Check if the bag has side grab handles. They will make it easy to take the bag off the luggage carousel.

Locking zippers will help your bag stay safe. However, you’ll have to buy a luggage lock, as usually it’s not included.

The Osprey Transporter is very easy to handle and carry. There are side handles that make it easy to take it off the luggage carousel or pull out of an overhead compartment if it’s a 40-liter version.

It can be used also as a backpack. When you want to carry it in your hand just put the backpack straps together with a Velcro flap. The standard duffel bag shoulder strap is not included but you can buy one separately.

The bag has 3 exterior compartments / pockets, and a zippered mesh pocket inside. The main compartment has a U-shaped top opening which is great because it is large and gives you easy access to all corners of the duffel.

There’s a flat pocket on the lid of the main compartment. It’s completely concealed (against your back) when the bag is carried in the backpack mode.

The flat lid pocket is the pocket where the duffel bag packs away into. Store it there when the bag is not being used to save space in your closet!

The North Face Base Camp duffel bags are weather resistant which means they will withstand rain and other natural elements (to a point).

The bags are made of 1000D phthalate-free TPE fabric laminate which is a strong and durable material. Texture of this material is kind of rubbery. Zippers of the bag are chunky and durable, and hardware – strong. It’s a duffel bag that is going to last long, and will be perfect for carrying heavy adventure equipment.

There are several compartments. The main compartment is very roomy, and has a weather-resistant zipper flap, and a mesh pocket on this flap. In addition to the main compartment, there’s a zippered compartment on one end (the XS and S bags don’t have it, though). It will allow you to separate your wet clothes and dirty shoes from the rest.

There’s a mesh sleeve pocket for additional organization, as well.

A very durable yet lightweight travel duffel bag.

The bag is made of an extra durable, water-repellent coated Bi-Tech Armor Lite fabric, which is an ultra-light abrasion resistant material. The material feels rubbery, and it is water repellent.

There are 3 compartments: the main compartment with a U-shaped lid for easy access and zippered end gear pockets. The duffel packs into one of the end pockets.

The bag’s main compartment has lockable zippers with large zipper circular pulls, so it’s easy to open the bag even with your gloves on. The zippers are shielded from rain by a storm flap.

The bag can be carried by its backpack straps, padded top haul handles, or side grab handle. Just like most of the best backpack duffels, the Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler doesn’t have a long shoulder strap.

The bottom of the duffel bag is foam padded to help protect contents against impact. Six heavy duty lash points will allow you to tie the bag down to a roof rack.

The Helly Hansen duffel bag is made of quality water resistant polyester fabric which is also lightweight and durable. The bag is well made, with good quality stitching and zippers. Judging simply by its reviews online it’s clearly one of the best duffel bags for travel.

The Helly Hanson duffel bag has one large main compartment with a U-shaped opening, and 2 internal zippered mesh pockets. One internal pocket is on the lid, the second – is on the side. There’s one outer zippered pocket as well.

The bag features rugged padded straps and carry handles. The backpack straps are solid, and they can be removed and tucked away in a dedicated pocket. The bag converts from a duffel bag to backpack with ease.

The bag comes packed in a pouch, so you could use this as a packable duffel. When packed its dimensions are around 13” x 11” x 4”. It’s a little bit bigger and heavier than those super lightweight packable duffel bags but also much more durable and weather resistant.

Note that there are no side pockets for gear or dirty shoes / clothes, as well as there is no traditional shoulder strap. The bag is available in 4 sizes.

This bag has 3 carry options: standard duffel handles, backpack straps, and a regular duffel shoulder strap.

The Thule Chasm duffel bag is made of durable Phthalate-free TPE laminate with a 1000D nylon base. This fabric stands up on its own yet easily folds for storage. The material is rubbery, and is water resistant. Bag’s hardware and zippers are high quality.

The bag has several pockets. The roomy main compartment with an oversized U-shaped opening makes it easy to pack and easy to get to your gear. Side zipper lets you access the main compartment from any angle.

There are a few internal mesh pockets that will help to keep your gear organized. There’s an exterior stash pocket that will store all your small items.

There’s a storm flap protecting the zipper of the main compartment, and the external stash pocket has a water resistant zipper.

Bag’s shoulder straps are removable, and duffel straps stow neatly along the side of the duffel when not in use.

The bag has sturdy bottom, and retractable aircraft grade aluminium handle. The 2 carry straps are kept together with a snap button wrap, and there are durable top handle and bottom handle, as well.

The bag’s roomy main compartment is divided into 2 parts. The divider is with a zipper, so you can open it when you don’t need it.

The top part of the main compartment has a wire frame that folds down. It helps to hold bag’s shape. There are 2 zippered side pockets and a large zippered pocket on the lid.

The bottom part of the main compartment is perfect for flat packing. It’s 4” (10.2 cm) high.

There are 2 large exterior zippered pockets on either side of the bag.

Note that it’s not the lightest rolling duffel bag! Just like the rest of the Briggs & Riley luggage it’s pretty heavy even when empty. Also it’s not the cheapest option! But, just like the rest of the Briggs & Riley bags, it’s going to last long – as it’s very sturdy and made of quality materials!

The Eagle Creek Load Warrior bag isn’t a traditional rolling duffel bag but still a great travel bag that is comfortable to roll around and carry. As well as it’s very durable and will hold up to wear and tear! It has a several useful features, too.

The bag is made of durable water resistant ripstop material. Exo-Skeleton seamless composite wraps around the bag to strengthen wear points of the bag.

The bag features large threaded wheels in durable wheel housing. There are durable feet at the bottom that keep the bag balanced. The bag has corner buffers and lash points.

It has multiple grab handles with extra bar tacks for reinforcement. They are on the side, on the top, and on the bottom of the bag. As well as there is a carry handle on the front of the bag.

There are several pockets and compartments. A deep zippered front pocket is perfect for storing dirty laundry. A roomy main compartment has inner compression straps and a mesh pocket on the lid. And the bag itself is expandable – it gives you more packing capacity when you need it.

There’s a small zippered pocket on the top of the bag, with a key fob inside.

On the back there’s a special zippered compartment that helps to protect the bag’s handle. There’s a special elastic equipment keeper which you can use to attach your jacket to the top of the bag. By the way, it’s my favorite feature of this bag!

The duffel bag packs and zips into itself for easy storage. When you are not using it just fold it and zip it. Have you packed too much stuff in your check in luggage? It’s not a problem as long as you have a packable duffel bag with you as well. You can always use it as your carry on for your excess baggage and avoid overweight luggage charges.

Use it as an emergency bag if your suitcase gets damaged! It can be used as a gym bag as well. There’s a separate odor and water resistant compartment for your shoes and sweaty gym clothes.

The Bago foldable duffel bag is made of Honeycomb RipStop fabric that is water and tear-resistant. This material is very thin yet strong. And it’s lightweight as well. Actually the bag is that light that it adds almost nothing to the weight of your stuff.

A huge duffel bag! This Shacke foldable duffel bag will be perfect for a college student, occasional travel with a family or as a just-in-case bag that can be packed small and put in your main luggage. It’s made of water resistant nylon.

The bag is durable! You can easily put in over 50 lbs. of stuff into the bag, and it will hold up well! Expecting that most will be carrying heavier items, a thick and comfortable foam shoulder pad is added. Also the bottom of the bag is double lined for extra support.

The bag feature metal hardware, which are way durable than the plastic ones!

There’s a large main compartment, outside pocket and an inner pouch. The zippers of the outer pocket and the main compartment are 2-way, and can be secured with a TSA lock (not included). Zipper of the main compartment runs all the way to the side of the bag allowing you to pack and access the contents easily.

The Shacke duffel bag folds into 14” x 13” (35.6 x 33 cm) pouch for easy storage. It’s very easy to pack it! Lay on a flat surface, fold all the excess fabric toward the middle of the bag. Flatten and fold it in two. Zip it up slowly so you don’t snag the loose fabric. That’s it!

As the bag is large (75 liters) you’ll need to check it in. Unless you don’t pack it full.

Just like the other packable duffel bags and packable daypacks, the Shacke duffel bag is floppy and doesn’t hold its shape when empty.

The bag has one large main compartment (opening is not U-shaped), small zippered front pocket and one open side pocket. There are a few mesh pockets on the inside.

The Vera Bradley duffel features 2 handles, and there’s no long padded over-the-shoulder strap. Some might consider it as a drawback.

The two handles are long enough (15” / 38 cm strap drop) to put the bag comfortably on the shoulder. However, they are not padded, so you might find it uncomfortable if the bag is too heavy and you need to walk for a longer time.

The bag is carry on friendly and machine washable.

Craftsmanship is top-notched, and the bag is made of quality genuine leather with durable canvas lining. The bag features sturdy metal hardware and durable zippers.

The bag has several compartments and pockets. There’s a big main compartment for clothing and other big items.

There are 2 side pockets for accessories, small electronics, etc. A front pocket is ideal for small items, such as notebooks, cables, etc.

The Komal’s Passion Leather bag comes with an adjustable shoulder strap with a shoulder pad. The bag is fairly rigid, so it will stand on its own. It’s carry on friendly.

The bag may have natural odor at first, but it will go away eventually.

The S-ZONE travel duffel bag is a carry on friendly travel duffel bag ideal for short trips or as an overnight bag. The bag is made of canvas. Some parts of the bag, like the handles, the sides at the bottom, and the zipper pulls, are leather-trimmed.

As the bag is made of untreated canvas, it’s not water resistant. The bottom of the bag is made of canvas, too. So it isn’t water resistant either.

There are several compartments and pockets: a large main compartment, 2 interior open pockets, 2 zippered interior pockets and 2 zippered outer quick-access pockets.

The bag features metal hardware. All the buckles and clasps are sturdy and well-made.

The S-ZONE duffel bag comes with a detachable shoulder strap which, unfortunately, isn’t padded.

Dimensions: 21.7” x 14.8” x 10.2” (55.1 x 37.6 x 26 cm); capacity – about 50 liter.

Great leather carry on friendly travel bag that is ideal for a short trip or a weekend getaway. Great craftsmanship and design!

The RusticTown duffel bag is made of genuine buffalo leather which goes through vegetable tanning process. It helps retain the natural characteristics of the material, while making it more flexible and durable.

The bag has strong metal hardware and durable zippers.

There are several compartments and pockets. A large main compartment which opens up nice and wide has several organizational pockets: zippered interior pocket, four card slots, 2 pen holders and one open pocket. There are outside quick-access zippered pockets, as well.

The bag comes with a detachable and adjustable shoulder strap with a shoulder pad, and a detachable leather ID tag.

Dimensions: 20” x 11” x 7” (51 x 28 x 18 cm).

Weight: around 4 lbs (1.8 kg).
