Do you want to know how to choose a perfect diaper bag?
In this article, I have covered everything you need to know before choosing the diaper bag that suits you.
Before getting into the topic, let me explain some basics of diaper bags.
Quick Navigation
What is a diaper bag?
A diaper bag or a nappy bag is a large bag that is used to carry nappies and other items for your baby.
Why can’t I choose a backpack over diaper bag?
Of course, you can. But you should understand that your regular backpacks are the perfect choice when your baby gets a little older or turns into a toddler and, all you need is to carry a pack of wipes and a couple of diapers.
The difference between a normal bag and a diaper bag is not only storage. The diaper bag has insulated pockets that keep your baby food warm or cold, changing mats, etc.
Also, nappy bags are made with easy-to-spot clean outer materials.
Organizing all your little one`s stuff in a backpack or regular bag and searching for it whenever you need is a headache.
A Diaper bag has a designated area to hold baby items like wipes, feeding bottles, etc. It saves lots of time and whenever you require to find something.
In simple words, it provides a place for you to carry the things that you need for your baby and also a convenient way for you to get what you need for your baby instantly.
Baby nappy bags come in all sizes and shapes nowadays. From diaper clutch, backpacks to cool and stylish diaper bags.

Features of Diaper Bags
Construction
A better internal and external structure is essential.
Look for proper finishing with a rivet or zigzag stitching bag.
The flap-type model will be better than the direct open type due to an extra layer of protection.
It will be easy to access if your diaper bag has wide open that helps to find things quickly.
Base
Look for a bag that has a base. It should stand on its own. This feature helps you to reach in and find what you need with one hand.
Handles/Straps
Straps play an important role in bags. You should feel comfortable while wearing the bag.
In a tote-style bag, handles should not be too long or too short. If the handles are too long, the bag could drag on the ground while carrying like a briefcase. Meanwhile, if they’re too short, the bag may not fit comfortably over your shoulder.
Likewise, the straps on a backpack should be padded, comfortable to wear, and adjustable for proper fit.
Some backpacks come with a sternum strap, which connects the shoulder straps at the upper chest and can distribute the weight more evenly.
In messenger-style diaper bags, the single strap should be wide enough and comfortable.

Closure
Look for strong zippers so that everything stays inside when you bend over or inevitably drop the bag.
My suggestion is not to choose the velcro type. It tends to get stuck on things and can disturb your sleeping baby with the noise it makes when opening.
Strong large teeth metal zippers are a perfect choice. I feel zippers are better than magnetic closures due to the extra layer of safety.
Material/fabric
There are hundreds of choices in fabrics like glazed, coated canvas, polyester, nylon, etc. Don’t go only with outside designs.
Regular spit-ups and spilled juice happen while traveling with your baby.
A nylon or microfiber bag bags are moisture-resistant.
Easy to clean both inside and out.
Vinyl is not the best choice as the material can crack not only after some wear and tear. But also when the temperature dips.
In simple words, you should choose a diaper bag with an easy-to-clean, waterproof interior fabric such as nylon or microfiber and a durable exterior.
Machine Washable
If your diaper bag is machine washable, then it will be convenient for you.

Color
Many color choices are available. You can also go for baby colors or light colors.
However, my choice is dark shades which are less likely to show dirt or stains.
Bags with patterns like animals and baby toys look more like diaper bags. But some designs look more trendy and not like a diaper bag at all.
There are pros and cons to both options, so find one that suits you best. That is a personal preference.
Size/Storage Space
Do you need a diaper bag for a long trip?
Do you need a diaper bag for regular use or daycare?
The size depends on the purpose of your diaper bag.
For long trips, you may need more items. Meanwhile, the small size is good enough for regular usages like shopping, one day trip, or a party.
Your bag should not be too big or too small. If it is too big, you might end up overfilling it or not finding what you need quickly. It won’t be comfortable to carry.
If it is too small, you will soon realize that there is not enough space for everything you need.
If you need to handle both a toddler and a newborn, go for a bigger one.
Your bag should be large enough to keep everything you need. Find the right size for you.
Else, you might consider buying a more spacious one for long trips and a more compact one for quick jaunts.
Weight
Check the weight of the bag during an online purchase.
Some types of fabric are heavy all on their own. It means that when you add things, you may end up with an extra-heavy bag.
So lightweight bags are more comfortable to carry on your shoulder or back for longer stretches.
Changing pad
Most of the diaper bags come with a rectangular changing pad, which you can fold easily and keep in its designated pocket. Likewise, It can be wiped easily.
Also, many diaper bags have a dedicated pocket for changing pads. That will be helpful if the pad gets soiled and you want to keep it separate.
But make sure the size of the changing pad is large enough for your baby.
Insulated pockets
Many diaper bags have a built-in insulated section for keeping your baby’s bottle warm or cold.
It can retain heat or cold temperatures no matter what the outside temperature is.
It keeps formula, breast milk, baby food, and other items cold or hot.
You can also get an insulated matching pouch/bag as an accessory.
For toddlers, you can use these spots for holding sippy cups, juice boxes, and more.
Stroller clip
This handy feature allows you to attach your diaper bag to your stroller, so you don’t need to carry anything separately.
If your stroller has a large sufficient basket, you don’t need to worry about this aspect at all.
Baby Crib with Shade Cloth
Some diaper bags come with a detachable portable baby crib that transforms the backpack into a travel bassinet that creates a sleeping space for the baby.
You can remove and clean it separately. So your baby can sleep in a clean and safe crib every trip.
It comes with a shade cloth to protect your baby’s eyes from the sun.
Larger expanded crib and shade cloth help many occasions, especially traveling.
It provides a safe and tidy place for you to change diapers or let your baby lie down and rest outside.
Anti Theft Pocket
This feature keeps parents’ valuable things safe when taking care of the baby.
Extra pockets
Pockets and compartments, both inside and outside, adds additional functionality to any diaper bag.
Additional pockets make it quick and easy to reach your things without spending much time.
Having designated spots to put things like wipes, keys, charging cables, power banks, cords, etc can help you find what you’re looking for more easily.
It will be helpful if you want to carry all your gear right alongside your baby gear. So you don’t need to carry a handbag as well.
So you don’t need to spend five minutes rooting around your bag every time you need to grab something.
Most of the diaper bags come with separate compartments for mobiles and laptops/tablets.
Some diaper bags have a separate pacifier case, USB charging port.
Some diaper bags have anti-theft pockets too.
Wet Pocket
Some diaper bags have wet pockets to keep soiled diapers, dirty burp cloth, etc.
This feature helps to keep them separate from other baby gear.

Price
Some diaper bags are expensive. It doesn’t mean that expensive bags are better.
It’s just a diaper bag. Most of us use it for two to three years only.
I would say, It is not worth buying an expensive bag. But on the other hand, don’t go for the cheapest bag without many features. You should buy a diaper bag that has both quality and affordable price.
You can get a good diaper bag for between $30 and $90.Some better-equipped branded diaper bags cost more.
So check according to your budget.No matter which one you buy, you will be getting a lot of use out of it.
You should expect costs between $30 and $150 for a high-quality diaper bag that should last through multiple babies and get the job done right.
Dad Friendly
If you wish, you could opt for one of the unisex diaper bags which is available on the market. However, it is a personal choice.
My best diaper bag features:
Diaper bags come with many features. The features required for me may not require for you. It depends on your need.
For example, some diaper bags have a detachable stroller caddy. I am not keen on that feature. But for some people, that may be the must-have feature.
So think about the features you need and buy according to that.
My must-have features are,
-> Proper finishing with a rivet or zigzag stitching.
-> Durable, Waterproof, and Easy to clean fabric.
-> Strong Metal Zippers.
-> Machine Washable.
-> Lightweight.
-> Backpack type with wide and padded straps.
-> Insulated Pockets.
-> Wet Pocket.
-> Anti-theft Pocket.
Conclusion
Every parent needs a diaper bag for at least the first two years of their baby’s life. They make it convenient to carry your baby gear.
Even when your baby was out of diapers, you can still use it to pack extra clothes and toys to keep him/her busy in the car or at a friend’s place.
