Why Leather?
So there are lots of different materials you can choose from if you’re looking for a really good new backpack. Nylon, polyester and canvas are probably the three most common you’ll see out there. They’re cheap, easy to make and will often last a few years. So why do we think leather is just a superior material? Well, read on to find out.
1. LEATHER IS LONG LASTING
Ok, so this is the #1 reason we see our customers choosing leather for a new backpack.
Nylon and polyester equivalents will often give out after a few years, or if you’re really unlucky maybe even a few months. Leather will not.
Real quality leather has evolved (on actual animals!) to last a whole lifetime. A cow or a buffalo (our favorite animal hides for backpacks) will only get one hide over its lifetime. So it needs to really last. Thicker hides have evolved to be super long lasting. The fibers in a quality hide will repel things like extreme weather and are extra tough to allow the animal to fend off predators.
It’s extremely common for our leather bags to last decades, if not a whole lifetime. You’ll be hard pressed to find a polyester or nylon bag that doesn’t rip well before a decade.

2. LEATHER IS BUILT FOR DURABILITY
If you’re planning to use your backpack when you’re in the great outdoors, you’ll want something that can really take a beating.
Enter real leather.
Just imagine this. You drive a good distance to this great hike you’ve read about. You’re enjoying the incredible sights and sounds in a beautiful forest. You feel like your mind has never been clearer. Then all of a sudden ‘rip!’. Your new nylon backpack gets a huge tear from a passing branch. Not only is your new backpack ruined, but your serene afternoon is completely kaput. It’s replaced by the desperate need to get all your gear back to the car with a torn bag. Not a great memory.

Types of Leather
There are three main types of leather you’ll want to be aware of when buying a leather knapsack. The type of leather you choose will not only change the price, but also the wearability and the look of your bag. We recommend wherever possible, to go for a high quality real leather backpack. These will usually last much longer than a similar backpack made from a synthetic material.
1. Full Grain Leather
This leather essentially comes straight off the animal onto your bag. It’s the very top layer of the hide, the most in demand and as natural as it gets. No chemicals processes are permitted.
Because no chemicals are permitted, this leather is really tough to work with – that’s why it’s the most expensive.
You’ll find full grain leather is super thick and maybe a little heavier than you’re expecting. This leather is 100% the natural skin, so you’re likely to find imperfections and blemishes – just like our own skin.
As no chemical processes are applied, this usually results in a brown leather color. Full grain leather will be the longest lasting leather type.

2. Top Grain Leather
This type of leather is still the top layer of the hide and super premium quality. However, this time chemicals and finishes are permitted.
This makes it easier to work with and means any blemishes and imperfections can be cleared away. You’ll find top grain leather bags have a perfect finish. If you’re looking for something smoother and blemish free, top grain leather is the way to go.
Many top grain leather bags are dyed to give a striking color. You will commonly see many shades of brown, but black leather backpacks for men are to be found when top grain leather is used.
Most leather haversacks we see are top grain leather – it’s often the go-to fashion choice.

3. Genuine Leather
This leather is made from the remaining hide once the top layer of the hide has been used for full and top grain leathers.
It’s still real leather and will appear so, however genuine leather backpacks are unlikely to last as long as full or top grain variants.
Chemical processes are usually applied to give a look similar to top grain leather and as it’s the least in demand, it is usually the most affordable variant.
4. Faux or PU Leather
Not surprisingly, faux leather is not real leather at all. It’s just another term for fake leather. PU leather is the same.
This is leather made from a combination of plastics. It’s manufactured to look like real leather so can be difficult to spot. A great way of checking is that faux leather backpacks will be cold to the touch and spring back instantly to it’s original position when depressed. It feels very unnatural.
PU leather backpacks do not have any of the durability characteristics of real leather. It can rip easily. You can think of it like nylon or polyester in terms of longevity, but it just looks kind of like leather. It will also not develop a patina.
When shopping online, we recommend finding out exactly what grade of leather you’re buying. If it’s not displayed on a product page, be extra careful and do your homework to really find out. You don’t want to pay full grain leather prices for genuine or faux leather.

Choosing the Right Style
Although this one is super personal, it’s worth knowing about 3 main categories you can fit this style of leather bag into. Think carefully about what style you’ll want to carry around.
If you go for something made of full grain or top grain leather and you look after it properly, it’s entirely likely your leather bag could last decades. Therefore, make sure you think about what style future you might want too!
Vintage
Usually the most popular, vintage leather backpacks for women and men are a throwback to a simpler time when quality ruled the roost. These will usually be styled to look decades old, and you expect people to assume they are just that.
These are often great as leather travel backpacks.
Usually, these bags will be finished with buckles and clasps instead of the more modern zippers and velcro. You’re unlikely to find much in the way of modern compartmentalization or design, but that’s not what you’ll be looking for in this type of bag. They’re great for storing things we’ve been carrying for decades like clothes, a water bottle (be careful: leather is a natural material and never fully water resistant), your wallet and more. These are something Indiana Jones might have appreciated.
Modern
In recent years, more modern designs of leather backpack purses have come to the fore. It is now entirely possible tom combine that old style leather material, with modern backpack designs that have room for your laptop, tablet, smartphone and more.
You’ll find these bags will have multiple pockets and compartments for all your gear and they may even have secret pockets for your valuables.
Zippers and velcro can secure your gear and make it so that it’s easily accessible.
Rolltop
Another design that is quite unique, but definitely deserves a mention is the rolltop backpack.
We find that these polarize opinion. Some will love them, some not so much. They’re designed to expand and retract depending on how much gear you’re carrying. So if you’ve only got a little amount of stuff, you can really roll it up and the backpack will look much smaller. It’s the opposite if you’re carrying a load of gear. Bonus if you can find something with a bunch of really well thought out side pockets, interior pockets and exterior pockets!
They really give you a lot of flexibility and are a great option for those who are looking for a leather rucksack for men or women as a day to day carry, but also a weekend getaway bag.

Features to Look Out For
1. Quality Backpack Straps
For most of us, we’ll be choosing a backpack style for comfort over longer distances. A good backpack should be much easier to carry than say an attache case for example.
To ensure this, look for a design that has thick, wide straps. Often a combination of leather and another material can be a great option. Look for something that is fully padded so it won’t hurt your shoulders. It’s really a necessity that these are fully adjustable so you can change the size when you need to.
2. Drawstring Opening
A design that is getting really popular, drawstring closures are a great look this year.
Not only that, they can be super convenient. You can stuff in a load of gear, then close the string really compact. Essentially, it’s almost as if the backpack itself expands and compacts with the amount of gear stored. It’s a great way of in essence having a whole bunch of backpack sizes in one bag. 3. Convertible Style
We’ve seen some bags are able to used as backpacks, but then also as briefcases or messengers when the shoulder straps are removed. This can be great if you’re looking for one bag that is suitable for all occasions. Use a rucksack on the weekends adventuring, then the same bag as briefcase for the 9-5 office day job.

4. Luggage Strap
These can be a godsend if you travel a lot. Simply attach your backpack to the handle of a rolling suitcase for comfortable, simple travel. You can easily wheel around your new backpack as if it’s just a part of your suitcase.

5. MESH REAR
Sounds weird right? Why would you want a mesh rear on a high quality leather backpack? Well, if you’ve ever carried a backpack over a longer distance you’ll know about the difficulties of a perspiring back. By the time you get to your destination, especially if it’s hot outside, you can find yourself with a sweaty, even wet back.
A mesh rear (that you can’t even see when the bag is worn) is designed to work against this. It gives your back more air and will help to reduce or even eradicate the back perspiration problem. Not by any means a necessity, but a realy bonus once you get used to it.

Picking the Right Size
The first thing to know, is that all types of real leather bags are heavier than you’ll probably be used to. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got room for all your gear, but perhaps be mindful that you don’t buy something that’s just way too big or heavy for what you need.
Our advice is to find a bag that can function as a leather laptop backpack. First, measure your laptop, and find something that it fits perfectly into. If your laptop is 15 inches in diagonal length (think how you’d measure a TV!), look for a backpack that claims if fits ‘laptops up to 15 inches in size’ in a padded laptop sleeve.
Be sure you’ve seen inside the bag before you go ahead and buy. We always like it when backpacks have hidden inside zippers or a real thought-through compartment system. Look for something that can hold your laptop in a padded sleeve, but also might have compartments for your pens, wallet, cell phone, papers, files and books.

Choosing a Color
Here at The Real Leather Company, we do recommend first and foremost choosing the color that goes with your standard outfits most.
If you’re looking for something that goes with really all looks, go with a black leather backpack for men. But for something a bit more classy that makes a little bit more of a statement, brown leather backpacks are a great choice.
It is important to note that color with full grain leather bags has more behind it than you may imagine.
If you’re looking for something that is truly designed to be the best durability out there, you’ll want a bag that has no processes applied whatsoever. As a darker shade of brown is usually the color of the hide, only brown leather bags will truly have no processes applied. Anything in black has been dyed. This does not make a noticeable difference to longevity in really quality leather. However in lower grade leathers, the colors can sometimes run, especially in very wet weather.
Getting Quality Hardware
Aside from choosing the right leather, this one is probably the next most important. Especially for longetivity. The last thing you want is to buy a really high quality leather bag, just for poor zippers to give out after a few weeks.
In a nutshell, you need hardware that is designed to keep up with leather that’s designed to last a lifetime.
With zippers, make sure they are created to be extra thick. Anything YKK is a real bonus too. Generally, thinner zippers give out faster.
Magnetic fasteners generally work great and will last a longtime along with being super convenient. Just make sure the stitching on them is really premium – double stitching is best.
Buckles will last forever. There’s really no moving parts on them that can break. However, they are a bit of pain to open and close so make sure to balance that.
Look for quality metallic alloys that are rustproof such as brass. Examine the stitching for a quality finish. And be on the lookout for thicker, premium zippers.

Proper Care
Whilst it’s true that a quality leather backpack is designed off the bat to last forever, there are still a few things you can do to keep it in great shape. What you’re really looking for with leather care is to create a rich patina. This is just another way of saying that distressed leather look. A rich patina is unique with all the bumps and scratches you naturally acquire over time – it’s what makes your bag truly unique.
By applying these methods of leather care, you can make sure your bag shows it’s rich history in a beautiful way.
1. AVOID EXTREME WEATHER
Excessive rain can harm quality leather. As quality leather is a natural material, it’ll get wet just like a real animal hide. It’s usually not a huge issue, just air dry it in a cool, dry climate away from direct sunlight. But if your leather bag is newly dyed that color can run. If the excessively wet leather is allowed to be damp for a long time (e.g. your basement floods and this bag is in a box down there) eventually mould may even start to appear – remember it’s a natural material.
Excessive sunlight can also have an effect on a quality leather bag. Whilst it can’t really ruin a bag, it can dry out and crack the leather giving it that distressed look a bit sooner than it usually would. For some, this is a bonus. But if you’re happy with the natual patina development, we recommend keeping your bag out of excessive direct sunlight for extremely prolonger periods of time.
Wherever possible, store your bag in a cool, dry climate. If it gets wet, dry it out away from direct sunlight. If it gets too much sun, apply a good leather conditioner to develop the patina in a rich layer.
2. USE A LEATHER CONDITIONER
A good leather conditioner can extend the life of your bag by years. It really helps to bring out the natural look of your bag. Those scratches and blemishes come out in a natural, deep look.
It’s even possible that a high quality conditioner can help to waterproof your bag by providing an additional layer of protection.

Treating a real leather bag with care can extend its life by years.
We recommend the following to care for your leather bag.
Always wash your hands before caring for leather – oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.
Once a week, we recommend taking a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth and briskly sweeping the leather. Don’t forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.
Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year to prevent your bag becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often. Simply apply the cream to the entire bag with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using this all natural leather cream for our bags.
Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your bag can have a good, long life.
CAN I GET IT MONOGRAMMED?
At this time, we do not provide monogramming or embossing services. However, all our bags can be monogrammed by most leather working dealers. We recommend taking our bags to your local dealer for more information.
CAN I GET IT WET?
Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather bag. We know this is not always possible, so if your bag does get wet, here’s what you do.
If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth as quickly as you’re able to.
Caught in a rainstorm? Be sure to let your leather bag completely air dry and do not use a heat source to speed up the drying (this can damage the leather). Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape and absorb moisture from the inside.
WILL MY BAG SMELL WHEN I GET IT?
As this bag is made from real leather, it is likely to emit a strong, natural leather smell when you first receive it. This will fade over time.
Should this smell not be to your liking, we recommend airing out your bag in a cool, dry climate for 48 hours.
