Why Leather?

Ok, so job number 1. Let’s figure out if leather really is the right material for your next messenger bag.

After all, real leather is a real expense with a real price point. It’s not cheap, and there are plenty of bags from other materials available out there that make nylon or canvas messenger bags. So let’s learn a little bit about why leather can be a great choice.

1. It lasts ages

There’s really no competition when it comes to longevity. If you’ve never had something made from real leather before, get ready to have your mind blown. Faux and PU leathers are really no alternative.

A really good full grain or top grain bag will last for decades. Real leather comes from the fully real hide of an animal. This animal hide will have endured years of tough weather conditions and has evolved to deal with them. When was the last time you heard about the millions of years of evolution of nylon or polyester? It’s really no comparison. It’s not uncommon for a real leather good to actually outlast the owner. We see many of our customers tell us they will pass on their leather item to their descendants.

But, it’s really important you know that not all leather is created equally. There are grades of leather to consider. Let’s take a closer look at the important facts of each.

Full Grain Leather

Full grain leather, simply put, is the top grade available in terms of longevity. It’s made from only the very top layer of the animal hide and no chemical processes are permitted. This means the fibers of the hide remain fully intact, giving it the ultimate durability.

That said, as no chemical processes are permitted, full grain leather will have some imperfections and blemishes. This is nothing to be concerned about. It’s just the effect of natural leather. If we were making bags from our own skin (sorry!), there would also be imperfections. It’s the same with cows, goats or buffalo. Over time, full grain leather develops a rich patina that is really incomparable.

Although some do prefer how imperfections make a bag totally unique, others are looking for something more uniform. Enter top grain leather.

Top Grain leather

Top grain leather is similar to full grain in that it’s again made only from the top hide of the animal. That gives it the ultra long lasting quality and is very much a premium material. It’s a little easier to work with though, as chemical processes are this time permitted. This means imperfections such as blemishes will be buffed or sanded away.

This gives a complete uniform look to goods made from top grain leather. When buying a top grain leather men’s messenger bag, you can expect it to be free of any blemishes. This comes at the cost of a unique look, and also can sometimes sacrifice a small amount of the fibers of the hide. Strictly speaking, you would expect a top grain leather bag to give out a little before a full grain one.

Genuine Leather

Confusingly, this is actually not a premium cut of leather. Genuine or bonded leather, is actually the bottom layer of the hide. It’s often made from the scraps of top layers and molded together. Rarely is genuine leather one piece from the hide. These can sometimes be hidden as pebbled or polished leathers. You’re looking for the word ‘genuine’.

Real genuine leather will still be authentic leather and carries some of the same properties. However, some of the long lasting effects will be diminished as it often required many processes to get bags of this type looking premium. This will be the most affordable type of real leather in almost every case.

Faux or PU Leather

Anything marked as faux, pu or vegan leather is not real leather at all. It’s usually a synthetic or plastic alternative made to look like leather. It won’t last anywhere near as long as we caution customers to be very careful before parting with any significant amount of money for faux leather goods.

Faux or PU leather goods will usually rip or give out in a matter of months.

2. The premium look

Real leather has been around for centuries. It takes real hard work and patience to craft a premium leather good. The fact you appreciate that says a lot about you. It shows you’re a person that has a real understanding of the qualities of perseverance, determination, discipline and grit.

Whilst yes, it’s a style piece, a real leather crossbody bag is also a good that shows what you believe in.

3. It’s an investment

Lastly, whilst real leather can seem expensive, when taken over it’s lifetime is often a steal. We’ve all had old backpacks that need replacing every few months. Well, real leather bags don’t need that.

It’s not uncommon to see a full grain or top grain bag last decades. They’re actually built to get more appealing over time too. You may even find it becomes more desirable the longer you have it.

Over decades, you’re actually saving a ton by not needing to buy a bunch of new bags.

What size do you need?

The question of size is actually really one worth your consideration.

If you’re thinking “well I just want the biggest one I can afford right?”, you’re not alone. We talk to customers everyday that order a big leather bag, only to find it’s not quite what they need.

That’s because real leather is HEAVY. Much heavier than your old nylon backpack. All that longevity does mean your bag is more substantial.

Therefore, you need to be considerate about what size you get. We recommend measuring your laptop carefully, then finding the right cross body bag for its size. If your laptop is 15 inches, we recommend getting a bag that is designed to fit a 15 inch laptop (not a 17) in a quality padded laptop sleeve. This’ll mean it’s much easier to carry.

We also recommend getting a good solid shoulder strap with a nice shoulder pad. Something made from a combination of leather for longevity and canvas for thicker comfort is often a great choice.

A luggage strap can also be a bonus. These are more popular on briefcase messengers. If you can find a bag that can be attached to a rolling suitcase, this can be a real bonus when traveling.

Hardware is also critical. Look for something that has brass or metal hardware for the rivets and buckles. YKK zippers that are slightly thicker than you may usually see will also benefit. You don’t want your premium leather bag to give out because the metals are sub-par.

Colors to consider

Color choice may sound simple, but there’s actually rather a lot behind it.

Buffalo and cow leather hides will almost always naturally be a shade of brown. As mentioned above, the littler that is done to a hide, the longer the bag will last. So if you’re looking for the tippy top in long lasting, don’t go for black or red or any other color. These will have been dyed. You can be certain that thick, brown leather messenger bags are the real deal.

However, other colors are more than acceptable in a whole bunch of cases. As we know, black goes with everything and is always popular. If you’re looking for something grown up and neutral, a black leather messenger bag is still built to last decades.

Proper Care

So do you just order a leather bag then that’s it? It’ll last 100 years? Well, maybe, but there are certain things you can do to make sure you maximize the lifespan of your leather messenger.

The first is to be cautious of overly wet conditions. Real leather is not 100% water resistant. When a real leather bag gets very wet, you’ll need to dry it out in a cool, dry climate outside. It may also emit an odor. We recommend keeping leather bags away from very wet conditions whenever possible.

Secondly, you can use a good leather conditioner. We recommend a solid coating of a leather cream or conditioner once every six months. This helps to keep the fibers in great shape and will over time protect the bag from challenging cond

Much Better Than Expected
“I ordered this on Black Friday, getting a good price. I was skeptical on just how good it would look, function, & hold up with heavy use. I have two other leather bags that I love, but I wanted to mix it up a bit. It feels good quality, and it doesn’t fold and crinkle like cheap ‘paper leather’ that I have seen with other leather messenger bags on Amazon.

I was impressed with the color. I find it to be a better, darker brown than what is in the picture. Granted, I’m sure there is a lot of color variations from bag to bag, but I love this ‘starting’ color on mine. Overtime, the wear, stretching and scratches will only make it look better.

There isn’t a smell on the outside, other than the smell of real leather. The inside canvas has a slight smell, but I know that’ll fade with time. I am letting it breathe for a week or two before using it. If it doesn’t dissipate, I may use some kind of conditioner on the canvas to try and wash it out.

Also, may I give a suggestion to the manufacturer – consider doing magnetic tabs or slip buckles underneath the leather latch. I knew it was latch, so I’m not disappointed, but after some regular use, cinching a buckle gets tiring. HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY BAG?

Treating a real leather bag with care can extend its life by years.

We recommend the following to care for your leather bag.

Always wash your hands before caring for leather – oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.

Once a week, we recommend taking a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth and briskly sweeping the leather. Don’t forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.

Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year to prevent your bag becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often. Simply apply the cream to the entire bag with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using this all natural leather cream for our bags.

Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your bag can have a good, long life.

CAN I GET IT MONOGRAMMED?

At this time, we do not provide monogramming or embossing services. However, all our bags can be monogrammed by most leather working dealers. We recommend taking our bags to your local dealer for more information.

CAN I GET IT WET?

Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather bag. We know this is not always possible, so if your bag does get wet, here’s what you do.

If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth as quickly as you’re able to.

Caught in a rainstorm? Be sure to let your leather bag completely air dry and do not use a heat source to speed up the drying (this can damage the leather). Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape and absorb moisture from the inside.

WILL MY BAG SMELL WHEN I GET IT?

As this bag is made from real leather, it is likely to emit a strong, natural leather smell when you first receive it. This will fade over time.

Should this smell not be to your liking, we recommend airing out your bag in a cool, dry climate for 48 hours.
