Ah, real leather. Is it the real deal or is it just real expensive? Let’s dive in and take a closer look.
Real leather is considered to be any material made from a natural animal hide. That most commonly includes cow, buffalo and sometimes goat hides.
Generally, you can expect buffalo leather to be the thickest and the strongest. However it is also the heaviest. Cow hide is the middle ground. Then goat leather will be the thinnest, but the lightest.
Here’s why we think real leather is great idea for your next bag.
1. BECAUSE IT LASTS
As real leather is made from real animal hide, it shares most of the same properties. For our purposes, the most important one is its longevity and durability. Animal hides have evolved over millennia to keep an animal as safe as possible. This means they have become especially well adapted to dealing with things like extreme weather or even predator attacks. All this means a real quality animal hide will result in a long lasting leather. If a hide can withstand a hurricane or a predator attack, you can bet it’ll deal with your clumsy whacks during your commute.
All this means that real leather is built to last. It’ll significantly outlast any polyester or nylon bag you might have had in the past and you’ll be shocked at it’s condition as the years go by.
It’s not uncommon to see a real leather bag last for decades.
2. BECAUSE IT GETS BETTER OVER TIMe
As your leather bag is used, you’ll find it develops a patina over time.
But what is a patina?
This is essentially a distressed or weathered look that occurs in top quality leather the longer you have your bag. It’s a result of scratches, oils, bumps, sunlight and more. Types of Real Leather
So it looks like real leather might be a good choice huh?
But there’s a few types of real leather. Which one do I really need?
Here’s a quick guide to which types you should be looking out for.
1. FULL GRAIN LEATHER
This is the very top layer of the leather hide and is generally considered the best grain available. It’s not treated, sanded or buffed – it’s exactly as it comes off the animal.
This means the imperfections from the animal hide will be present on your bag. This is the start of a rich patina that will develop over time. However, we know patinas aren’t for everyone and if you’re looking for something a bit more uniform and professional looking, full grain leather may not be right for you.
Because no chemical processes are permitted, it’s really difficult to work with and thus is the most expensive type of leather. However full grain leather is also the most hardwearing and usually lasts longest.

2. TOP GRAIN LEATHER
This is the most common leather you’ll see on higher end leather office bags for men.
The very top layer of the hide is again used, however chemical processes are permitted this time. The hide can be buffed and sanded and imperfections removed. This usually leads to a more uniform and smooth finish to the bag. For professionals looking for a bag that oozes class, top grain can be the right choice.
As some chemical processes are permitted, it will affect the durability of top grain leather bags just slightly. However, you can be assured that these bags are still built to last a lifetime.

3. GENUINE LEATHER
After the top layer of hide has been split off for top and full grain leathers, the rest is used as genuine leather. Artificial processes are applied here in an attempt to make genuine leather look like top grain leather.
Genuine leather has few of the characteristics of full grain and top grain leathers. It’s still considered real leather as animal hides are used. However, the chemical processes do affect the durability of this type of leather.
As this is not the most in demand type of leather, usually you will find genuine leather computer bags a bit more on the affordable side.
One more thing on real leather. Note that leather is not 100% water resistant due to it’s fully natural nature. We recommend caution when in particularly wet weather. Should your leather satchel bag get extremely wet, we recommend airing it out in a cool, dry climate.

FAUX OR PU LEATHER
Be cautious whenever you see the words faux or PU leather. These are in fact not real leather at all. They are usually a combination of plastics designed to imitate real leather.
They have none of the long lasting characteristics of real leather and you can expect them to wear out in a similar timeframe to nylon or polyester bags you may have had in the past.
Another thing to note is that PU leather processes have a reputation for having poor environmentally friendly scores.

What Hardware Do I Need?
Hardware is an important consideration. For the purposes of this explanation, you can consider hardware to include anything on the outside of the bag that isn’t made from leather. Buckles, rivets and zippers would fall into this category.
Often, real leather is built to last so long, that the first thing to give out is the hardware.
It’s important you balance the long term build of something like a buckle, with the convenience of a zipper.
Wherever possible, we recommend authentic brass hardware. This alloy is built to withstand and won’t rust over time. For zippers, YKK is the standard to be looking for. Ideally, you want the zippers to be thicker than normal, with larger teeth. Magnetic closures are also built to stand the test of time.
What Size Should I Get?
More crucial than you may think, size is indeed important.
That’s because real leather is heavy. Heavier than you’d probably expect if you haven’t been down this road before. Most leather briefcase laptop bags will be a few pounds, then again a few pounds more when you’re done cramming it.
So really, the practical thing to do is to just get one that is big enough for your needs. And not bigger than you need!
Make sure to get one with a comfortable shoulder strap for longer distances. Then use it over your head.
Think about what you’re going to use it for, then buy one that will fit everything nice and snug. And nowhere do you need to be more considerate than in finding the right one for your laptop.
LAPTOP FIT
When buying a leather computer bag, be sure to look into what size of laptop the bag is built to hold. Measure your laptop diagonally and make a note of this when you’re browsing different bags. Most laptops will be either 13, 15 or 17 inches and you’ll want a bag that protects your size the best.
Look for a product that specifically states it fits a ‘X inch laptop’. Bonus points if it’s in a padded sleeve too!

What Color Should I Get?
You might have seen a bunch of green, red or blue leather bags out there. That’s cool right? Well, sure. But it’s important you know the facts behind that.
Real leather, such as full grain or top grain leather is difficult to dye. It can be done, but it’s exceedingly challenging and therefore quite expensive. It will affect the durability of the bag, as again you’re altering the fibers.
Just be cautious that a cheap, dyed leather bag will often be genuine leather or faux leather.
If durability and patina generation over time is your goal, you’re really looking at the different shades of brown. As a general rule, the closer to the original color of the hide, the stronger the leather bag will be.
You should also think about what the color says about you. A brown leather laptop bag can really show that you care about quality leather that lasts. A black leather laptop bag may tell others that you’re a go-getter professional.
How Do I Look After A Real Leather Bag?
So, can I just grab my leather bag, treat it terribly and expect to pass it down to my kids?
Honestly? Well, maybe.
As we’ve discussed, these things are made to stand up to a real beating.
But, there are a few things you can do to maximise the lifespan of a leather bag.
1. Keep it away from too much wet weather
I got news for you. Cows and buffalo get wet. Just like we do.
That means real leather bags aren’t 100% water resistant. Wherever possible, a good canvas lining will help to protect the gear you’ve got inside, but the leather itself will need to dry out. A little bit of rain here and there can help to develop the patina, but anything excessive is just not worth the rub. A soaking wet real leather bag will need be aired out in a cool, dry climate ideally outside. It might take a day or two to dry.
Another thing to note is that if you do go for an excessively dyed real leather bag, wet weather could make this run.
2. USE A LEATHER CONDITIONER
A really good leather conditioner can work wonders for the appeareance and durability of your bag.
It massages the fibers and helps to restore their original long lasting properties.
A leather conditioner will also help to develop a rich, colorful patina. The oils and wax included in the finer conditioners will leave beautiful marks over time.

Much Better Than Expected
“I ordered this on Black Friday, getting a good price. I was skeptical on just how good it would look, function, & hold up with heavy use. I have two other leather bags that I love, but I wanted to mix it up a bit. It feels good quality, and it doesn’t fold and crinkle like cheap ‘paper leather’ that I have seen with other leather messenger bags on Amazon.
I was impressed with the color. I find it to be a better, darker brown than what is in the picture. Granted, I’m sure there is a lot of color variations from bag to bag, but I love this ‘starting’ color on mine. Overtime, the wear, stretching and scratches will only make it look better.
There isn’t a smell on the outside, other than the smell of real leather. The inside canvas has a slight smell, but I know that’ll fade with time. I am letting it breathe for a week or two before using it. If it doesn’t dissipate, I may use some kind of conditioner on the canvas to try and wash it out.
Also, may I give a suggestion to the manufacturer – consider doing magnetic tabs or slip buckles underneath the leather latch. I knew it was latch, so I’m not disappointed, but after some regular use, cinching a buckle gets tiring. HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY BAG?
Treating a real leather bag with care can extend its life by years.
We recommend the following to care for your leather bag.
Always wash your hands before caring for leather – oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.
Once a week, we recommend taking a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth and briskly sweeping the leather. Don’t forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.
Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year to prevent your bag becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often. Simply apply the cream to the entire bag with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using this all natural leather cream for our bags.
Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your bag can have a good, long life.
CAN I GET IT MONOGRAMMED?
At this time, we do not provide monogramming or embossing services. However, all our bags can be monogrammed by most leather working dealers. We recommend taking our bags to your local dealer for more information.
CAN I GET IT WET?
Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather bag. We know this is not always possible, so if your bag does get wet, here’s what you do.
If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth as quickly as you’re able to.
Caught in a rainstorm? Be sure to let your leather bag completely air dry and do not use a heat source to speed up the drying (this can damage the leather). Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape and absorb moisture from the inside.
WILL MY BAG SMELL WHEN I GET IT?
As this bag is made from real leather, it is likely to emit a strong, natural leather smell when you first receive it. This will fade over time.
Should this smell not be to your liking, we recommend airing out your bag in a cool, dry climate for 48 hours.
