Galina, St. Mary’s, Jamaica
If you’re traveling in northern Jamaica and looking to get off the beaten path, there’s a place on the North Coast that has become close to our hearts.
The non-profit, American Caribbean Experience (also known as ACE), serves one of the poorest regions in Jamaica: St. Mary’s parish. They facilitate projects in education, healthcare, enterprise, and faith-based programs. About a decade ago, ACE bought and restored a hotel on the coast, which is now a central piece of their operations. Galina Breeze Hotel provides jobs for the community, develops partnerships with local enterprises, and regularly hosts short-term mission teams from the States.
The hotel is much more than a charity operation, though. Galina Breeze is a beautiful boutique hotel with gorgeous ocean views, clean and colorful rooms, breakfast included in the room price, and a typical Jamaican jerk shack on property. With accommodation costs being surprisingly high on the island, rooms for $110 at Galina Breeze are a great value – and give you a more authentic experience of Jamaica than most all-inclusives.
Why We Went
From 2012 to 2014, my husband and I were Peace Corps Volunteers in Jamaica. Though we lived on the opposite end of the island, we ended up visiting Galina Breeze several times to rest and rejuvenate. We got to know the staff of the non-profit there and upon completing our Peace Corps service, they actually contracted us to run their social media.
Our most recent trip to Galina was this Spring. We visited ACE and stayed at Galina Breeze along with a good friend of ours who did some professional photography for them. It was great to catch up with friends we hadn’t seen in a couple years, as well as to get fresh new content for our client’s online accounts.
