1. Mozone Large 401 Lightweight Travel Water Resistant Backpack

Mozone Large 45l Lightweight Travel Backpack/foldable & Packable Hiking Daypack (Black)

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Folds Up Small

This backpack can fold up small to be packed inside of another item of luggage. This a great feature for international travelers who only plan on backpacking for part of their trip.

Being able to pack your backpacking supplies once you reach your base destination saves you the hassle of worrying about TSA travel guidelines or lost supplies while en-route to your location. Not every situation warrants a travel backpack, so being able to fold it up and tuck it away when other luggage is more suitable saves hassle, time, and money.

Feature #2: Large

The backpack is large enough to carry a lot of supplies along the way. It is one of the largest backpacks on our list in terms of the volume that can be carried, allowing ample room for multiple changes of clothes, various electronic or hunting gear, water, and first aid necessities.

The more you can carry in one backpack, the easier your backpacking adventure will be. Nobody wants to hassle with carrying multiple bags on their journey. It’s a great bonus to know that you can fit anything and everything you may need along the way in one convenient bag.

Feature #3: Compartments

The large space of the bag is divided into multiple compartments. There are separate places for water or fluids that will prevent leakage into your other supplies.

An electronics compartment can carry your laptop, camera, phone, or other electrical needs without fear of breakage or damage done. The clothing and shoe compartment allows you to separate dirty clothes from clean, ensuring that you keep your laundry separated and look and feel your best while on the trail.

Having the options to divide and organize makes the entire trip more enjoyable by eliminating much of the stress typically associated with such trips.

Real Users Feedback

While many of the reviews were positive regarding the size of the backpack, some found that there is such a thing as too big. When the backpack is full, it can be hard to carry.

Additionally, there were issues with the stitching being weak, causing easy tears and seam breaks when too much weight was applied. Otherwise, the compartment organizers were a big hit with one reviewer who claimed they could pack a weeks worth of supplies easily.

Pros

  • Large
  • Many Compartments

Cons

  • Not Durable
  • Hard to Carry when Full

2. SwissGear Travel Gear Scansmart

SwissGear Travel Gear Scansmart Backpack - Black / Red

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Padded Laptop Compartment

The padded laptop enclosure protects the laptop from breakage when the backpack is dropped or inadvertently slammed into a hard surface on the journey. The leading cause of laptop breakage is taking on hard hits in everyday use.

Being able to carry the laptop in a compartment that is both conveniently designed for the device, but also padded to provide extra padding helps to protect your computer. If you are traveling for school or work, you’re going to need to be able to access your computer all along the way. Keeping it safe is vital.

Feature #2: Shoulder Strap System

The shoulder strap system of this bag is designed with safety and comfort in mind. The straps allow you to carry the bag with vital weight distribution to help save your back from the strains of carrying too heavy a load.

Also, they provide support to your body and the bag to prevent theft and drop page while you are traveling unfamiliar or unsafe terrain. By keeping the weight off your shoulders, you’ll also be able to walk longer with fewer breaks, allowing you to make the most of your time on your backpacking adventure!

Feature #3: Multi-Zip Closure

The multi-zip closure of this backpack allows you to open and retrieve items from a certain part of the backpack without having to fully open the bag and search through everything you’ve packed.

For example, if you know that you have packed an extra pen into the electronics compartment of the bag, you can only open that section of the bag to retrieve the pen without opening the full length of the zipper, exposing all your contents and risking loss or theft.

Not only does the multi-zip closure save time, but it provides added security, which is needed when exploring a new place.

Real Users Feedback

Most of the reviews were good, stating that the bag is both attractive and functional. Ironically, the bulk of the complaints came from those who are already loyal fans of the SwissGear brand name.

Those individuals seemed to think that this particular model was more “cheaply made” than other design options that have been available in the past. Some even went as far as to say that it feels like it could be a fake SwissGear and inauthentic.

Pros

  • Attractive
  • Functional

Cons

  • Not to Par with Brand Reputation

3. Outjoy Laptops Shockproof Travel Backpack

17.3 inch Laptop Backpack with Rain Cover Shockproof Waterproof Travel Work Backpack School...

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Shockproof Design

Just like the SwissGear model, this backpack provides a shock-proof laptop compartment to protect your computer from damage if dropped or jostled on your journey.

Feature #2: S-Shaped Shoulder Straps

This backpack’s shoulder straps are ergonomically designed to keep weight evenly distributed through the strongest parts of the back. When the weight is kept off the shoulders, the back is more healthy during the trip, resulting in less pain and discomfort along the way.

Also, the risk of injury is reduced when the weight is distributed, so you can feel safer when traveling unfamiliar ground.

Feature #3: Rain Cover

If you’re backpacking, odds are you’re going to encounter some adverse weather. If you encounter rain while hiking outdoors, you run the risk of water leaking into your backpack, damaging or ruining your supplies.

The provided rain cover allows you to keep your entire backpack safe from the moisture, preventing any leakage from spoiling your clothes or seeping into your electronics equipment.

Real Users Feedback

With the exception of a few minor ripping issues, the backpack seems to hold up well. Many were complimentary of the quality of the backpack, stating that it held up to numerous tests.

The rain cover seems to work well and has successfully kept contents dry. The S-shape straps were a hit, also, leaving many wearers pain-free at the end of their long journey.

Pros

  • Attractive
  • Comfortable
  • Safe

Cons

  • Some Minor Ripping Issues

4. Tortuga Travel Backpack

TORTUGA Air Travel Backpack - Carry-On-Sized, 27L, Expandable Weekend Bag

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Carry- On Sized

This backpack is carry-on sized! No checking bags means saving money at the airport and no loss from the airline along the way. One of the biggest nightmares that travelers experience is losing their luggage before they reach their destination.

Being able to conveniently pack your needed items in a backpack that will fit into the overhead compartment on an airplane means you don’t have to trust others to keep up with your stuff. This is a breath of fresh air to anyone that has ever had to file a lost luggage claim with a major airline in the past.

Feature #2: Lockable Zippers

Lockable zippers add a safety feature that is hard to top. The zippers actually come equipped with a lock that allows the consumer to secure their items inside of the bag. Zippers are easy enough to open with the flip of the wrist, making zipper closures one of the most vulnerable when it comes to petty theft.

Locking your zippers in place keeps thieves at bay. They aren’t able to open your bag, reach-in, or help themselves unless they have the key in hand.

Feature #3: Ergonomic Straps and Hip Belt

We saw ergonomic shoulder straps and discussed their many benefits when we reviewed the last backpack. The Tortuga Travel Backpack goes a step further by also implementing an ergonomic hip belt, which relieves a lot of strain from the hips while carrying the bag.

This not only helps to support the back but also provides added comfort to your sides and legs while traveling. It’s a must-have if you intend to do most of your traveling by foot.

Real Users Feedback

Most reviewers were very impressed by the ergonomic design of the backpack, stating that it was a comfortable bag to wear even for long durations of time.

They also appreciated the overhead-sized design of the bag. Other reviewers complained that the bag’s design was not created with short people in mind, stating that the hip belt doesn’t fit well on those under 5’5” or so. The price was another source of contention.

Some who reviewed the backpack said that they didn’t feel the price tag was worthy of the offering.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Higher Priced
  • Not Designed for Short People

5. Incase EO Travel Backpack

Incase EO Travel Backpack (Black) fits up to 17' MacBook Pro

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Large Laptop Compartment

The laptop compartment on this backpack can fit a laptop up to 17”, which is considerably larger than the average 15” laptop compartment you could expect to find on a travel backpack. With more people opting for larger computers, being able to find a backpack that provides safety for their preferred screen size is invaluable.

Having options is always nice- since no two people are the same, it’s an absolute necessity to have options available when purchasing traveling bags.

Feature #2: Expandable Compartment

The main compartment of this travel backpack can expand up to 35% if needed to allow for more volume to be carried. The bag can be worn tightened to its smallest size, which would prevent swinging and loose play in the backpack in most cases.

Being able to expand the bag, though, if needed provides space in case you buy a neat trinket along the way or acquire something you weren’t planning on packing when you started the trip. As tourists, we all like to bring home souvenirs. Be ready to carry them as they come along!

Feature #3: Easy to Clean

Backpacking is messy. There’s mud and dust and dirt. Sometimes, there’s blood. Naturally, you’re going to sweat. Being able to clean your backpack will keep you looking, feeling, and smelling fresh on your journey.

The backpack is made of easy- to- clean nylon material that wipes off almost effortlessly. Spills and stains are no longer a worry since they can be dealt with quickly and easily from wherever you are.

Real Users Feedback

All of the reviews for this backpack were good, which is typically a great sign, but the limited number of reviews is troubling. The only complaint that was available was regarding the size. The person who wrote the review felt that, although the bag could be expanded, it still was not large enough.

Pros

  • Great in Seemingly Almost Every Way

Cons

  • One Minor Complaint about Size

6. PacSafe MetroSafe LS450 Anti-Theft 25L Backpack

Pacsafe Metrosafe LS450 25 Liter Anti Theft Laptop Backpack - with Padded 15' Laptop Sleeve,...

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Organizational Options

This backpack, like many of the others we have seen, has compartments to divide up your supplies however you see fit. Where this one stands out, though, is that the compartments are moveable. The dividers can be pulled from their braces and placed however you want.

Are you carrying more equipment than clothing? No problem. More water than food? That’s okay, too. You are in complete control of your bag’s layout and organizational design. This is a wonderful feature for anyone that needs to be in control of their own destiny.

Feature #2: Anti- Theft Technology

There are anti-theft straps and locks designed into this backpack. The straps and zipper locks keep thieves out of the backpack, providing safety for the contents of your bag. You don’t have to be afraid for your electronic equipment, money, or personal items. They will be safe and sound as long as these features are properly implemented.

Feature #3: Wire- Stitched Fabric

Wire- stitched fabric prevents the materials on this backpack from ripping during exposure to sharp rocks, branches, or other hazards. It can also play an important role in preventing cuts from the inside related to hunting knives or other supplies.

The most important bonus of this feature is that it completely halts cut- and- run theft, which is common in some highly-traveled areas. Thieves have grown accustomed to zipper locks and anti-theft straps. Some resort now to using a knife to penetrate the bag. The wire- infused fabric of this backpack’s design will stop that before it starts.

Real Users Feedback

Again, there aren’t many reviews to base much off of. The main complaints were regarding a laptop pocket that is designed too small, making it hard to fit even a standard-sized laptop to bring along.

Most remedied this design flaw by using the main pocket as a laptop bag, instead. Some others felt that the backpack was uncomfortable. Nearly all, though, agreed that the anti-theft measures can’t be beat and that the bag was overall very durable.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Anti- Theft

Cons

  • Uncomfortable
  • Small Laptop Pocket

7. Osprey Far Point 40 Travel Backpack

Osprey Packs FARPOINT 40, Volcanic Grey, Medium/Large

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Huge Volume

This backpack has a huge 25 L volume, allowing the user to carry an impressive amount of gear along for their journey. There is no need in worrying about space to pack the comforts along with the necessities on this backpack design. You get to bring it all!

Feature #2: Wide Straps

The wide straps of this backpack distribute weight evenly across the shoulder, keeping any one part of the straps from “digging in” and creating soreness or injury. This means that the wearer can walk longer and further with fewer breaks and less rest. It’s a great feature to have for those who want to get the most out of their day every day.

Feature #3: Fits Overheads

Again, this bag conveniently fits in most airline overhead compartments. This is a great feature for those who need a backpack to use when they are flying abroad and don’t want to have to run the risk of checking baggage.

Real Users Feedback

Most of the reviews were very good. Many of those who reviewed the backpack used the bag to backpack through Europe. They also felt that the backpack was bulky and hard to carry, especially when the massive volume of the backpack had been fully reached.

Wearing the backpack also seems to infringe on the flexibility of travelers, making it uncomfortable for carrying long durations. Overall, it’s hard to tell whether the reviews are the result of picky purchasers or if the backpack does really have as many problems as are outlined.

Pros

  • Great Size

Cons

  • Bulky
  • Inflexible

8. Kelty Redwing 44 Backpack

Kelty Redwing 44 Backpack, Ponderosa Pine

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Airflow Back

The Airflow back of this backpack allows for air to reach the back of the person who wears it. The backpack keeps the wearer cool and comfortable, even on the longest of hikes.

Air being able to reach the back prevents rashes and other injuries associated with overheating, which can significantly alter the course of an otherwise enjoyable adventure if precautionary measures aren’t taken.

Feature #2: U-Shaped Zipper

The U-shaped zipper of the backpack allows users to open one end or the other without fully opening the backpack. While it doesn’t have all the same convenience of the multi-zipper design we saw earlier in the review, there is added convenience of being able to decide which part of the backpack to open without having to dig through everything inside.

Feature #3: Lightbeam Stay

The light beam stay of the backpack keeps the load stable. This is a must-have if you plan to walk in areas where the ground is slippery or uneven. The slightest misstep could lead to serious injury if the back is burdened with a weight that it can’t distribute appropriately during a fall.

Real Users Feedback

Many reviewers are highly impressed by the design of this backpack. One even touted it as “the best thing I’ve ever bought on Amazon.” The backpack has been used by those who reviewed it to backpack across Asia, Europe, and for hiking in the woods.

They all say that it is a comfortably designed backpack and stylish and it leaves the wearer feeling safe and secure. Only one reviewer could be found complaining about rips in the fabric.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Stable
  • Stylish

Cons

  • Lacks Durability

9. Osprey Porter Travel Backpack 46 Liter

Osprey Porter 46 Travel Backpack (2020 Version)

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Straight Jacket Compression

The design of this backpack stabilizes and compresses the load of the backpack, meaning that the bag’s contents are secure and evenly distributed across the body.

The weight distribution is incredibly beneficial for the wearer because it keeps the burden of the weight from inflicting too harshly on any part of the back or shoulders. The pain that is created when the weight is not evenly distributed can be long-lasting and can bring backpacking trips to a swift end.

Being able to carry it well, instead, provides the comfort needed to get through the journey with minimal discomfort.

Feature #2: Reinforced Cord Loops

The reinforced loops provide attachment points to the bag. These are handy for adding backpacks, water bottles, or other needed items that would otherwise not fit inside of the bag or items that are needed to be reached without removing the bag to search for them.

Hanging keys, camera supplies, or water bottles keeps the traveler moving, saving time and trouble throughout the journey.

Feature #3: Zipper- Top Accessory Panel

The zipper- top accessory panel keeps phone chargers, pens, identification cards, phones, and other commonly needed supplies separate from the rest of the bag. Having them stored in a handy spot at the top of the backpack means that time and energy is saved and frustration is kept to a minimum.

Real Users Feedback

Most of the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. The backpack seems to be comfortable and versatile, providing the right balance of efficiency and comfort throughout the journey.

Some complaints were prevalent, though. The backpack is too large for some, creating more of a bulky hassle than was necessary. Although the bag is stylish, it was surprisingly large by some buyers’ standards.

Pros

  • Versatile
  • Comfortable
  • Stylish

Cons

  • Too Large

10. Deuter Transit 50

Deuter Transit 50 Travel Backpack with Removable Daypack, Anthracite/Moss

Buy on Amazon

Feature #1: Removable Carry Strap

This backpack comes with an additional carry strap, which allows for the pack to be slung over the shoulder instead of being carried across the back. The strap provides a lot of additional comfort, but can also be removed if someone feels that it is in the way.

Options are a wonderful thing for any purchaser, especially when it is a first time purchase of an item that they are unfamiliar with.

Feature #2: Separate Bottom Compartment

A separate bottom compartment provides a place to keep an extra set of shoes, a sleeping bag, or anything else you might need that would create awkward placement or only get in the way while packing the main compartment of the bag.

A lot of people who buy travel backpacks with bottom compartments like to use the space for an extra pair of shoes that will give their feet a rest should they start to get sore or blistered from the usual pair. Being forward-thinking for your comfort, health, and safety is an absolute necessity when planning a long trip.

Feature #3: Detachable Day Pack

This bag’s detachable day pack allows the wearer to take off and go on a shorter jaunt in the middle of their larger adventure. If you aren’t going far for the day, you probably don’t want to pack everything you need.

Detach the side day pack and only bring what you’re going to use before you return at the end of the day! Give your shoulders a break and enjoy a day of rest. You deserve it!

Real Users Feedback

Most reviewers said that the backpack holds a lot and is comfortable and versatile. The main complaint was regarding stitching issues. Many said that the stitches wore out and separated at the seams, causing tears and breakages long before the backpack should have fun out of usefulness.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Versatile
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Some Stitching Issues

Final Verdict for the Best Travel Backpack

So, when all is said and done, which of these backpacks worked out the best in the side-by-side comparison? Let’s take a look, factor by factor, and decide:

Factor #1: Comfort

When it comes to comfort, there were some very clear winners and very clear losers in the side-by-side comparison. The PacSoft proved to be very uncomfortable by many of those who bought and reviewed the backpack while the Mozone had some mixed reviews regarding comfort.

The SwissGear backpack model was comfortable if the wearer stood taller than 5’ 5”, but seemed to be difficult to carry for those who came in under the measurement.

The InCase model seemed to be a favorite as far as comfort goes. Nearly everyone who wore the backpack said that it fit well and was comfortable, even on a long journey.

Factor #2: Durability

Again, there were certainly backpacks that did better than others. The Deuter backpack, for example, was a disappointment when it came to the stitching of the bag coming unraveled long before the life expectancy of the bag should have expired. The Kelty model, also, seemed to have some issues when it came to the stitching of the fabric and overall ability to hold up to the elements.

The InCase model was both durable and easy to clean, keeping it fresh throughout the journey. The PacSafe bag was one of the more durable. The wire stitched into the fabric kept the bag not only from accidental tears but also from being cut open, making it the leader in this category of the comparison.

Factor #3: Safety

The PacSafe was the clear winner in terms of safety. The anti-theft straps and locks prevent thieves from breaking into the compartments of the backpack while the wire-threaded stitching keeps the bag from being able to be cut open.

The Kelty had the Lightbeam stay, which evenly distributes the weight for carrying across the back, stabilizing the carrier on rough terrain and slick ground.

The Mozone was probably the most unsafe with its cumbersome design, making it a hard backpack to carry. This opens the wearer up for falls and injury throughout their journey.

Factor #4: Convenience

The Osprey bag was the least convenient. The large size of the bag makes it hard to find anything, and also hard to carry. The Mozone backpack was better, offering a large number of compartments for carrying items needed throughout the journey.

The Deuter did provide a lower compartment for shoes and a zipper pocket for smaller items that are needed along the way. The PacSafe had the best organizational convenience option, however, with its moveable inner compartments.

Being able to organize the internal compartments of your backpack in any way you like is a great feature for anyone, particularly those who travel often and need to have versatility in their packing options.

About Travel Backpacks

The best travel backpack will be easy to carry and large enough to hold everything you need to have a successful trip. Whether you’re hunting with a gun or a camera, taking along a computer to write your adventures, or planning to do rock climbing, you’ll need to be sure all of your gear arrives with you at the destination of your choice.

A travel backpack is far easier to carry than a suitcase. In most cases, they are also more durable. Travel backpacks are wonderful for avid travelers because they don’t need to be set down as often as a suitcase. They require less planning and provide more freedom to get up and go on a whim.

There are certain factors that must be considered, though, when determining the best travel backpack.

The factors are:

  • Comfort
  • Durability
  • Safety
  • Convenience

Factor #1: Comfort

If you plan to spend a lot of time walking while wearing your travel backpack, suffice it to say that you will want one that sits comfortably on your body and allows you the freedom you need for mobility. One of the most important aspects of backpack comfort is the way in which it carries weight. If your travel backpack does not distribute its weight properly, it can create tension across the shoulders and in the lower part of the back, leading to pain and discomfort. Wide-set straps, a solid frame, and capacity for weight distribution are all positive features to look for when considering the purchase of a travel backpack.

Factor #2:  Durability

When used frequently, any accessory will begin to wear down. A travel backpack is no different. These backpacks are tossed through airport terminals, they fall off of bikes, and are worn through some of the roughest terrain out there. Wouldn’t it be awful to have a backpack split open at the worst possible time, spilling your needed items out with no way to carry them further? You want a travel backpack that can stand up to the test of the elements and time. Look for efficient stitching and rugged, high-quality materials when you are checking out potential purchase options.

Factor #3: Safety

Always keep safety in mind when looking at travel backpack purchases. Is the weight distributed well? Will it help you maintain your balance when you’re walking in an unsafe place? Can you reach all your needed items without straining? Are there locking mechanisms available to protect your gear? You want a backpack that is helping you make the best of your travels- not hurting you or putting you at risk along the way. Look for a backpack that not only provides security for the items it carries, but will also put the least amount of strain possible on your body.

Factor #4: Convenience

Finally, the best travel backpack will provide you with plenty of organizational and security options for your travels. Many backpacks feature special, fully separated pockets to store electronic devices, water, and other supplies. Others even offer multiple zippers allowing you to reach the items you need most with minimal digging. Ideally, you will be able to find a travel backpack with all the features you need to get the most out of not only your next planned trip, but any other trip you may plan in the future. Just steer clear of pockets that are too large, non-separable, or lack features needed for searching or locking.

Final Verdict

The winner of this comparison, when all factors are considered, is the InCase EO Travel Backpack. There are a few reasons why this backpack stands out above the rest.
