We rarely look forward to aging, which is why it’s important to find new ways to celebrate and look forward to birthdays. Continuing to challenge ourselves and break out of routine keeps life fresh and fun even when the years start to add up. One great way to do this is create a birthday bucket list.
A birthday bucket list can be “40 things I want to do before I turn 40” or “30 things to accomplish in my 30th year.” But it doesn’t have to follow the numbers. It could also be about doing one new thing a month to celebrate turning 60, for example.
How to create your birthday bucket list
1. Choose key categories – Coming up with a few categories that you value in life can help narrow down what should be on your bucket list. Examples could be goals around finances, relationships, health, adventure, or work.Â
2. Gather ideas for your list – A quick search on Google or Pinterest will help you find lists other people have completed for their birthdays. Here are some examples to get you started:
- Write X number of thank you notes to people who have impacted your life
- Read X number of books
- Take a pottery class
- Pay off student loan or credit card debt
- Visit a friend you haven’t seen in a long time
- Do daily yoga sun salutations for a month
- Complete a “couch to 5k” challenge
- Create a website for your side hustle business idea
- Travel to a new continent
- Try sky diving
- Keep a one-sentence journal for the full year
3. Finalize your bucket list – Using your value categories as a guide, narrow down your ideas to the appropriate number. Remember that although it should be a challenge, this should also be something you look forward to and can realistically be accomplished in the time you have. Too many big goals can become more of a burden than a celebration, so make sure there are plenty of fun little things you can check off easily.
4. Set yourself up for success – Create a plan of action and assign each bucket list item to your calendar. Some items may take some extra planning and research, so be sure to schedule that ahead of time, too. If you’re the kind of person who thrives on external accountability, it can help to announce your bucket list to others – whether in conversation or by social media. That way, your friends can cheer you on and offer support if they have expertise related to one of your goals.Â
