Babywearing Safety and Comfort – Baby Carriers & Slings

How your baby carrier is used is just as important as which one you choose. Here are some tips for ensuring babywearing safety and comfort for you and your newborn.

“IT’S NOT WHAT YOU WEAR, IT’S THE WAY THAT YOU WEAR IT…”

So they say, and it’s true of baby carriers, too. Lots of baby carriers are marketed as suitable from newborn. But it can be hard to know if you’ve got yours fitted correctly and that baby is safe and supported.

Dave and his family came to us this weekend for a Consultation, thinking their Lillebaby baby carrier was too big for their newborn. However, it just needed some adjustments.

Here’s what we did:

Placed waistband of the carrier high up on dad’s torso, so baby would be seated at easily-kissable height ✔

Poppered the base of the carrier on to its narrowest setting, so baby is supported from one knee pit to the other, so her legs weren’t overstretched ✔

Cinched in the middle of the carrier using the accessory strap, narrowing the rest of the carrier so it’d support the whole of her body and avoid her flopping to one side (with the plastic clip placed outside the carrier so it wouldn’t press into her back) ✔

Folded and poppered down the top of the carrier, so it supported her up to the base of her skull but no higher. This meant great head support without risk of airways being covered ✔

Placed our hands under baby’s legs and gently tipped her pelvis forward, encouraging her neutral, newborn ‘froggy legged’ knees-higher-than-bum position ✔

Baby worn close to dad’s body, rather than over his coat, for a less bulky ride and better temperature regulation.✔

Et Voila! Babywearing safety and comfort at its best…snug, safe and close enough to kiss.
