“We should learn to look with the eyes of a child, hear with the ears of a child and feel with the heart of a child.” Alfred Adler
Celebrating at every opportunity: 4 years of ergobag
This year, the ergobag team was thrilled to celebrate yet another birthday, kid style. After singing our favorite birthday song, we got right into it with the traditional German children’s game of Topfschlagen, or “hitting the pot.” ergobag founders Sven and Flo were the first to be blindfolded and, with a wooden spoon in hand, attempt to find the hidden pot with a little guidance from the rest of the team. After a short while, with a little help from fellow ergobaggers (“warm… waaaarmer…”), Sven was able to locate the pot, allowing the other players from the backpack crew to try their luck. Rows of chairs were then formed for an exciting game of musical chairs. The team danced around until the music stopped, then quickly tried to snag a seat. With these and other games, we all had a great time that evening. What other fun activities were in store? See for yourselves:
7 tips for birthday party games (based on German tradition)
1. Fisherman, how deep is the water?
The children take turns being the fisherman, who must indicate how the water is to be crossed and attempts to catch the other party guests.
- The children line up in a row.
- The birthday child plays the fisherman first, standing some distance away from the other kids.
- The children then call out in unison: “Fisherman, fisherman, how deep is the water?”
- The fisherman then responds as he chooses, for example: “1,000 feet deep!”
- The children then ask: “How do we cross?”
- The fisherman then decides how the guests should attempt to reach the other side, such as by swimming, running, hopping, walking backwards, etc.
- The children then cross in the manner requested, while the fisherman also attempts to switch sides in the same way. On the way there, the fisherman tries to tag as many kids as possible.
- Every child that gets tagged must then help the fisherman.
- The last child remaining (or the last to get tagged) is the new fisherman.
2. “Stop Dance”
The birthday child starts the music and the guests dance around the room or yard.
- When the child stops the music, all the other kids must immediately freeze.
- Anyone who moves is out. The music restarts, and the remaining players dance again until the birthday boy or girl bring everyone to a halt once more.
- The rounds continue until only one child remains; he or she is then in charge of starting and stopping the music.
3. I’m packing my suitcase
This game is a test of your memory! Any player who forgets what the others packed inside the suitcase is out. Pay close attention and try to “catch” those who forget an item.
4. Blowing the cotton ball
In this game, players try to blow a cotton ball over their opponent’s side of the table. Everyone plays against each other, and all the laughter can make blowing into a straw quite challenging. In addition to working out your laughing muscles, this game is also good training for your oral reflexes.
5. Blind cow
This game has been passed down for generations in Germany and is still enjoyed today. One child is blindfolded and plays the “Blind Cow.” The other children then taunt the Blind Cow while he or she tries to catch them.
6. Telephone
One person whispers a message to another, who then whispers it to another, and so on. At the end, the story rarely resembles the original version, providing for much laughter.
7. Eating chocolate
In this game, whoever puts on a hat, scarf and gloves the fastest can enjoy a piece (or more) of chocolate, until another player rolls a six…
- Each child rolls a die up to three times. If he or she does not roll a six, he passes the die to the next player. If he or she does roll a six, the race is on!
- The child must don a hat, scarf and gloves and then use a fork and knife to cut bite-sized pieces off a chocolate bar and eat them with the fork.
- Meanwhile, the other children continue to roll.
- If another child rolls a six, the boy or girl eating the chocolate must take off all the winter gear and pass it on to the one who rolled the six.
- The process is repeated until the next kid rolls a six.
- The game ends once all the chocolate is gone.
To make it even more fun, wrap the chocolate ahead of time in newspaper and tie a cord around it. On their turn, the players must then first unwrap the chocolate using the fork and knife before they can begin cutting and eating.
