To put it plainly, real leather is a different class.

If you’ve never had a real, high quality leather good before you’re likely to think it’s different from anything you’ve experienced before.

Here’s why we think real leather is the best choice for a brief:

1. It’s Built to Last Forever

Sounds corny right? Well, truthfully we really couldn’t think of a better way to describe the long lasting nature of quality leather.

Think of it like this. The cow or the buffalo has evolved over millennia to be protected from the elements. These animals are built to withstand extreme cold, heat; even snow. They are more difficult to tear into for predators and really what’s the reason for this? It’s their hides. They need to be tough and strong to just keep up in nature. All this means that a high quality animal hide on your leather bag actually has years and years of evolution behind it. It’s not just strong, it’s mother nature strong.

Now, there are a few different types of real leather available. And it is important you know the difference so you can choose the right one for you. Here goes.

Full Grain Leather

This is the very top layer of the animal hide and is unaltered. This means that any blemishes or marks on the hide (animals have these just like we do on our own skin!) will be apparent on a real leather good. No chemical processes to buff or sand out these marks are permitted with full grain leather. It’s exactly like it was on the animal, right onto your new leather good.

Whilst this does put some people off, we think this can be a real positive for full grain leather. Firstly, it means your bag will be completely unique. The unique markings will mean your bag is not like any other out there. The markings also allow the bag to develop a rich, and again unique, patina. Over the years marks, scuffs, oils and more will leave a trace on your bag and give it a much richer patina (think of a patina like that distressed look you want). With full grain leather the initial marks give you a starting point.

All this means that full grain leather briefs will typically outlast any other type. No processes of sanding or buffing are permitted, so the fibers remain totally intact. This gives extra longevity and durability.

We find that with more casual workplaces, full grain leather briefcases can be a great choice. But for something a bit more professional, where you’re looking for a smooth finish, top grain might be the answer.

TOP GRAIN LEATHER

This type of leather still uses the top layer of the animal hide, but this time, processes are permitted to give the hide a uniform, smooth look. If you’ve ever seen a really sleek (yet still thick) leather good this is likely to be top grain leather.

As this hide can be sanded or buffed, there will be no imperfections present. Your bag will not be unique, but it will definitely give off an air of superior quality. Attache cases that need to be used for high powered professions are very commonly made using top grain leather. Our collection of premium attaches uses mostly top grain leather infact.

Top grain leather keeps most of the durability of full grain leather. As the fibers are processed, you will lose some of the longevity. However these bags are still very much made to last decades and we recommend them highly.

GENUINE LEATHER

This one is always popular with those new to the world of leather. Genuine leather should be the best right? Well, actually no.

Genuine leather is actually the lowest grade of leather out there. It’s still real leather, but it’s made from the bottom layer of the animal hide. And often it’s made using lots of pieces of stitched together bottom grade scraps.

It won’t have all the durability of full grain or top grain leather. But it is still in fact real leather so will last longer than a nylon or polyester bag.

If you’re looking for something a little cheaper, genuine leather can be an option.

FAUX OR PU LEATHER

If at all possible, we recommend staying away from faux or pu leather. These are not real leather and as a result have none of the durability properties.

Fake leather are supposed to imitate real leather and can looking pretty convincing when you first take a look. Some have even been known to apply scents to make them smell that way. Which can be great until they give out after a few months.

One great trick is to press your finger into the surface. If it stretches or wrinkles (a bit like our skin!) you can be confident it’s real leather. If it springs straight back and is cold and smooth to touch, there’s a good chance it’s fake.

What size Briefcase do I need?

The question of size may not be as straightforward as you might think.

For many of us, when we buy stuff we’re looking for the biggest one we can afford. Houses, boats, cars, tents, bags.

Well with leather that might not be exactly what you’re looking for.

That’s because real leather has a real weight. It’s heavier than you’ll be expecting.

Especially with bags that you’ll be carrying by hand like attaches or by shoulder like laptop briefcases or leather briefcase backpacks, you need to be careful you’re not saddling yourself with something huge and heavy that you don’t need.

We recommend measuring the diagonal dimensions of the biggest thing you need to carry. Likely your laptop. Then get a work bag that fits that perfectly. If your laptop is 15 inches, get a briefcase that’s meant to fit a 15 inch laptop (not a 17!).

Here at The Real Leather Company, the most common return reason we see, bar none, is customers buying bags that are too big for them. Although we offer easy returns, we all want to get it right first time. Get something that’s right for you, not necessarily the biggest one you can find.

What features should I be looking for?

Alright, so modern briefcases have more features than you can shake a stick at. Here are some of our favorites

1. Thoughtful compartment design

Look for something that the designer has clearly thought deeply about. Stay away from anything that just has one big pocket for all your gear. It might seem like it’s ok, but it’s so beneficial to have separate pockets to find all your gear.

You want something with zippers to keep important stuff secure and multiple interior and exterior pockets. You should be able to find a good brief that has specially designed pockets for your wallet, pens, business cards, credit cards, water bottle and more.

We also really like bags that have special padded laptop sleeves. As leather can take a good beating, we’re all guilty of treating leather goods a little roughly. A bit of padding to protect your computer can go a long way.

2. Combination Lock

If your work deals with sensitive files this is a must. You should be able to grab something that has a 3 or 4 digit lock to keep the brief locked and away from prying eyes.

Even if you’re just a private person, these can be great for peace of mind in the office. Some variants even have keys if this is your preference.

One thing to remember – there’s no forgot your password service for these. So write the pin down somewhere else in case you go a few weeks without using it when you’re on vacation.

3. Shoulder Strap

If you’re gonna carry your work bag over longer distances, you’re definitely gonna want a leather briefcase with a shoulder strap. You want a comfortable, thick shoulder strap that is adjustable and can be removed when not useful.

Attach it to your bag at the sides and put it over your head when going longer distances. This helps to balance the load and keep you comfortable during a commute.

4. Luggage Strap

If you do a lot of business travel, a luggage strap can be a godsend. These are designed to allow your brief to attach to the luggage handle of rolling suitcases. Your bag then sits nicely on top of your suitcase and you need only wheel the suitcase.

It’s so much better than lugging around a load of gear in both hands between hotel rooms and airports. These aren’t always available, but are getting more popular. Keep a special eye out for these.

5. Quality metal hardware

Ok, so we know leather is built to last. But what about everything else the bag is made from? Rivets, buckles, zippers. It’s no good if your leather is in great shape but the zippers are broken and a buckle is falling off.

Look for something that has quality long lasting, rust proof metal like brass or silver.

You want to strike a balance between the longevity of buckles and the convenience of zippers. Thicker zippers will last longer and magnetic closures can be a great middle ground. If you want something to last a lifetime, think carefully about

How do I Care for my Leather Briefcase?

Leather is naturally built to last a really long time.

But, there are actually things you can do to prolong this actively.

1. KEEP IT OUT OF EXCESSIVELY WET WEATHER

Leather is a natural material. And we don’t do a lot of processing the finest cuts. So that means it’s not 100% water repellent. Look for something with a quality lining like canvas to protect your gear, but be mindful of really wet weather.

If your leather bag gets wet, that’s ok. You can dry it out in a cool, dry climate preferably outside. But you might find that if this happens to often your bag takes on a weathered look prematurely. You want the patina to develop naturally.

2. KEEP IT OUT OF DAMP CUPBOARDS

If you’re not using your leather briefcase for a while, don’t store it in the cellar that floods sometimes. Leather does best in cool, dry conditions. Hang it up somewhere as an ornament or even leave it in a covered outside garden.

3. Treat it with leather conditioner

We recommend using a good leather conditioner to prolong the life of your bag. Gently massage this into the leather to restore and waterproof your bag. This adds to patina development and will help to supercharge the lifespan of your bag.

We recommend one treatment every six months to really develop the bag and protect it adequately.

What Style of Leather Briefcase do I want?

Leather Attache Cases

These are your classic premium leather briefcases and probably the first thing that came to mind.

Leather attaché briefcases are known for their timeless design and are perfect for men that are looking for that classic, elegant style. Amongst many other professions, do we find in particular that our customers enjoy using these as lawyer bags for men.

Traditionally, these briefcases were designed to hold files and documents. Most briefcases for men in leather in this category will have multiple file compartments and are designed to hold stacks of A4 documents, along with pens, business cards and folders. If your profession is document or paper heavy, these are a great option.

Usually, these briefcases would be on the thicker, heavier side as they were originally designed to hold lighter materials such as paper.

Combination locks are common on leather attaché briefcases. If you’re looking for something to carry sensitive documents, these are usually a great option. Think carefully about this though, it may mean any items you need to get to frequently may take a second or two to access.

If you’re looking for something that will also hold your laptop, tablet or other tech, be sure to take a closer look inside and look for a leather attaché that has a special laptop or tablet compartment. Whilst attaché briefcases were not originally designed for the digital age, many modern briefcases in this category will have evolved to hold modern tech.

Note that when holding laptops, tablets and files many attachés are likely to be on the heavier side and are unlikely to come with a shoulder strap. Think carefully about the distances you’re likely to carry an attaché with heavier items inside.

For these types of briefcases, you’re going to want something that fits your laptop perfectly. Measure the diagonal length of your laptop screen, then look for a laptop sleeve that corresponds to that size. Most will be either 13, 15 or 17 inches.

Treating a real leather bag with care can extend its life by years.

We recommend the following to care for your leather bag.

Always wash your hands before caring for leather – oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.

Once a week, we recommend taking a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth and briskly sweeping the leather. Don’t forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.

Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year to prevent your bag becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often. Simply apply the cream to the entire bag with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using this all natural leather cream for our bags.

Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your bag can have a good, long life.

CAN I GET IT MONOGRAMMED?

At this time, we do not provide monogramming or embossing services. However, all our bags can be monogrammed by most leather working dealers. We recommend taking our bags to your local dealer for more information.

CAN I GET IT WET?

Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather bag. We know this is not always possible, so if your bag does get wet, here’s what you do.

If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth as quickly as you’re able to.

Caught in a rainstorm? Be sure to let your leather bag completely air dry and do not use a heat source to speed up the drying (this can damage the leather). Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape and absorb moisture from the inside.

WILL MY BAG SMELL WHEN I GET IT?
