According to a statement released by Herschel, the best way to wash their backpacks is a simple as using a mild soap and only cleaning the affected area.

• A mild soap is basically a soap that is not considered to cause harm or irritation to the skin.
• Mid soap brands – Dawn, Palmolive, Seventh etc.
• If you’re washing dishes with it, chances are its a mild soap.

Remember you don’t want to clean an entire area or the whole bag. Don’t go pouring Dawn soap all over your bag. You want to spot clean, meaning specifically targeting only the part of the bag that is dirty.

Herschel released another statement specifically advising their consumers TO NOT wash their bag in the washer. Only to use a liquid soap to clean the affected area.

The main reason you do not want to wash your Herschel Backpack is to avoid damaging the bag. Not only could you compromise the use and function, but you can ruin the aesthetics of the bag. You do not want to walk around with the worlds worst looking Herschel bag.

First Step – How To Wash a Herschel Backpack

Well your first step is to clean your bag out. Put the soap and water down and lets make sure everything inside the bag is on the outside.

The last thing you want to do is cause accidental damage. If you see any dirt or crumbs inside the bag let’s make sure we get that out also.

If your having trouble getting the tiny crumbs out, feel free to use a handheld vacuum or something similar. Make sure you get inside all the pockets and hidden spaces to leave the backpack spotless.

For any other dirt or dust either use your hand or a soft brush to remove it. If your having a hard time getting dust off, lightly wet a rag and remove the dust.

As we mentioned above, Herschel states you should use a mild soap. A mild soap is basically any soap you use to wash the dishes by hand.

If you prefer an organic label soap that should be fine. Any popular brand of dishwashing soap you don’t mind touching your hands is the best way to think about it.

Third Step – How To Wash a Herschel Backpack

Some users may tell you to grab a tooth brush or something similar, but we do not like that idea. The safest option in our opinion is a soft sponge.

The reason we think you should use a soft sponge is the fact that it won’t damage any delicate materials the way a brushes bristle will.

At this point you should have:

1. An empty and clean backpack
2. A mild soap
3. A soft sponge
4. Water

Fourth Step – How To Wash a Herschel Backpack

With the sponge in hand lightly run it over some warm water. Place a little bit of soap on the area of the sponge you will be applying to the bag.

Move the sponge in circular motions to gently penetrate the affected area. Repeat this process and apply soap as needed.

Remember it is better to use less soap and water at first to see how the material of the bag and the affected are will react.

Once the affected area is clean, use a damp rag or a clean sponge to wipe off or absorb any of the soap residue.

Fifth Step – How To Wash a Herschel Backpack

Once the bag or the specific area is clean. You can air dry the bag by hanging it outside.

Make sure their is no rain in the forecast and it’s positioned in a way where the outside dirt will not get into or onto the bag,

If you do not have the ability to place it outside then let the backpack hang indoors. If you are impatient you can use a blow dryer at a distance, but we recommend air drying it.

In our first step we advise you to look any loose threads near or or around the zipper. It’s important to do this after you wash the backpack as well. Taking a second look may help you catch any new or threads of fabric you may have missed.

You can also take this time to look for any additional damage to the bag. If you find any damage to the bag like wholes or tears, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take the backpack to the tailor to fix it.
