5 reasons you should ditch your tennis bag

It’s been a while since you’ve carefully scrutinised your tennis bag, hasn’t it? If you aren’t on the tour or playing tournaments every weekend, perhaps the bag you’ve been lugging around isn’t entirely fit for purpose. Here are 5 flaws that most tennis bags suffer from…

  1. They are brightly coloured and heavily branded
When was the last time you bought anything that was bright red and had a huge logo covering the full width? Let’s face it, the major tennis racket brands just want to make their bags as loud and in-your-face as possible with the goal of selling more rackets (which is their core business). The pros have to wear them for obvious reasons. But for most people, serving as a walking advertisement for your racket brand isn’t high on the agenda.

  2. They can only be used for tennis
Ever take your racket bag to the gym? What about a cross training spin session? Do you cringe when you have to walk into the office with your tennis bag? Traditional racket-shaped bags and tennis backpacks are designed to be single-use products. From both an aesthetic and functional perspective, they only work for tennis and look out of place everywhere else.

  3. They’re made of cheap material and mass produced
The vast majority of tennis bags are made from the same cheap materials (and probably created in the same factory in China). The nylon looks fine until you scuff it or get it slightly dirty. At that point all bets are off because they are very difficult to clean and restore to a state where they look new. Traditional tennis bags aren’t designed with longevity in mind, so if used regularly their lifespan is only a couple of years until they fade and start to look worn out, misshapen and sloppy.

  4. The design hasn’t evolved for decades
Tennis is a sport steeped in tradition. The classic look of the all-white dress code at Wimbledon is embraced by virtually all players and fans as emblematic of the sport’s illustrious heritage. Equally, the dramatic way in which the final set at most Grand Slams can still go on for hours is truly special to behold. While racket frame and string technology has undergone well-documented, significant changes, the accessories for the sport haven’t evolved at all. Bags are still racket-shaped, ugly and bulky. Tennis backpacks are a somewhat new addition to the typical range offered by major tennis brands but they all look the same. Even bags touted as ‘premium’ or ‘luxe’ still have an overly-sporty look and can only be used for tennis.

  5. They lack any semblance of style
When was the last time you looked at a tennis bag and thought “that’s really beautiful” or “I’d love one of those”? Tennis is an incredibly stylish sport. From how it’s played, to its glamorous icons (Fed, Borg, Rene Lacoste, Fred Perry), celebrity spectators (Anna Wintour, Kevin Spacey, Hugh Grant, international royalty) and fashionable enthusiasts around the world. With this backdrop, your average tennis bag just doesn’t fit in. None of the tennis brands have taken the time to think about what a tennis bag could be. Just how good could a tennis bag get? If there were no limits, what would the perfect tennis bag look like?

Epirus tennis bags beside traditional tennis bags

The Epirus bag collection was conceived to overcome the shortcomings of existing tennis bags.
Our goal was to help busy people fit more tennis, sports and fitness into their lifestyle. The bags in the Epirus collection are much more than just tennis bags: they’re bags for every facet of your life. They’re your office bag, gym bag, yoga bag and weekend-getaway bag. They’re completely different to any tennis bag you’ve seen before and do things other bags simply can’t.

The versatility of the Epirus collection is derived from the way they look and function. First and foremost a tennis bag, each is designed to carry 2 or more rackets and all of the accessories a tennis player needs. However, each bag also fits everything you need for your work day too – including your laptop, devices and chargers – so it caters to your life beyond the tennis court. And since tennis rackets have the largest dimensions of all racket sports, our bags work for squash, badminton, padel, and real/court tennis too.

Epirus bags are certainly not for everyone, but if you lead an active, varied lifestyle, if you value design, craftsmanship and quality and prefer to invest in long-lasting, timeless items then we’re sure you’ll find a bag that transforms how tennis fits into your life.
