Why am I mentioning this right at the beginning?

Because if you want to travel smart in Europe it’s a good idea to travel with a carry on backpack only. Since the checked baggage fees for low cost airlines are high. If you are stowing your baggage in the hold be prepared to pay. Sometimes it may cost you as much as the airline ticket itself, sometimes even more.

A carry on is not a big bag, yes. So you’ll need to pack smart to adhere to carry-on requirements.

Of course, there are both traditional and low-cost airlines in Europe.

But since low-cost airlines are that popular now in Europe, we’ll talk more in details about them.

There is no one standard carry on luggage size.

Each airlines has its own restrictions on luggage size and weight, even the number of bags allowed on the plane. Yes, several airlines may have similar baggage rules but definitely not all of them. Check airline’s FAQ and information pages before booking a flight, if that is important to you.

There is no one standard carry on luggage size in Europe.

Before Buying a Carry on Backpack for Europe

1. Think if there is an airline or airlines of your preference.

Ones you are or will be flying with frequently or even almost all the time?

Or – if you are buying a new bag specifically for the trip you are going to take, then think if you are going to take one airline (and which one) or several?

2. Check airline restrictions on luggage size and weight.

This information does change once in a while.

In 2018/2019 Ryanair and Wizz Air, two of the most popular low-cost airlines in Europe, changed their luggage policy several times. As a result creating a confusion for thousands of passengers.

3. Decide if a bag you choose to buy meets the requirements.

If you don’t have one preferred airline or you don’t know what airline will you fly with during your trip to Europe, then better look at a bag about this size – 21.6″ x 15.7″ x 7.8” (55 x 40 x 20 cm). You can use such a bag as a carry on luggage on most low-cost airlines in Europe.

Low-Cost Airline Baggage Fees in Europe

Low-cost airlines make their money from extras, such as luggage, food, insurance, and so on.

Do you want to travel cheap in Europe? Travel without checked baggage and not spend money on airplane meals.

Mostly checked luggage in Europe cost anywhere between 15 and 30 EUR per bag, depending on an airline. This is a price for a 44 lbs / 20 kg bag, if paying the fee at time of booking.

If you’ll be traveling with more than a carry on, compare the final price before making a booking. Sometimes it will totally make sense to fly with a traditional airline. On some occasions it will even be cheaper. One thing many forget  is that low-cost airlines sometimes don’t use the same airports like traditional airlines flying on the same route.

And that may affect  your transportation costs for getting to and back from the airport.

One more reason why it’s always worth comparing. Because when traveling with a traditional airline you are mostly entitled to free checked luggage and at least one meal.

Remember – you can’t take full size toiletries in your carry on bag.

Second Piece of Luggage Rules in Europe

Some of the budget airlines allow passengers to take two bags on board – a carry on and a small personal item (a laptop, a camera bag or a handbag).

Take into account that usually there are restrictions on the personal item, as well. Check the maximum size of the personal item before packing your bags!

And remember, that there are also airlines in Europe that don’t allow a personal item.

1. What Will You Be Mainly Using It For

The main difference is bag’s main compartment. The main compartment of a front loading backpack has a U-zipper which opens all the way down. Making it very easy for you to pack and access your stuff.

The main compartment of the top loading doesn’t have a U-zipper. Which means you’ll have to take out all or most of your stuff to access something that’s at the bottom.

Why Travel With A Carry On Only

For the last 5 years (and counting) I’ve been traveling carry on only for most of the time. And from my own experience I can assure you, that it really is the way to go. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, 1-2 week holiday overseas or an extended trip to volunteer abroad, one carry on backpack is all you need in most of the situations.

Here are the reasons why I love to travel with a carry on only:

– Your backpack weights less. A carry on sized bag won’t be as heavy as a larger backpack. Simply because there is less space and one has to think what to take and what to leave behind.

– Moving around is easier for you. It’s way easier to be on the move with a carry on bag than a full size luggage. It’s easier to board a train or bus only with only one smallish bag. It’s easier to walk short distances when you have only 15 lbs (7 kg) of stuff instead of lugging a bag that weights 45 lbs (20 kg) or even more.

– You can save money. If you fly often, you’ll save money, as you will not need to pay for hold luggage. Also carry on bags tend to be cheaper than full size backpacks and luggage.

– You can save time. You’ll save time, as you don’t have to wait in a queue to check the bag in, and in most cases can go directly to the gate. Also you don’t have to wait for your luggage at your destination.

– You have more time for sightseeing. Depending on the weight of your carry on, you even can go and explore the city with your bag on your shoulders. Without checking in the hotel first. Sometimes it’s just more convenient to start exploring right away. If you arrive early and check in isn’t yet possible. Or if the hotel is on the other side of the city.

How to Pack Smart to Reduce Size and Weight of Your Luggage

It’s not that hard actually. You just have to follow some simple rules.

Here are some of our best packing tips:

– Plan ahead.  And take only what’s necessary. Say no to “what if” stuff (“Oh, I might need this!”).

– Take less clothes. There’s no need to take an outfit for each day, as you’ll definitely be able to wash your clothes on your way.

– Take less shoes. Reduce the number of shoes you bring along.

– Pack quick-drying, lightweight clothing.

– Use a microfiber towel. Take a packable microfiber travel towel instead of a space consuming bath towel.

– Use packing cubes. Roll your clothes and put them in packing cubes or space-saver (compression) bags.

– Use a toiletry bag. Keep all your toiletries together in a toiletry bag.

– Use an electronics organizer. Keep all your cables together, and use an electronics organizer.

– Wear your bulkier clothes and footwear instead of carrying them in your backpack.

Remember – weight of your bag counts, too!

When buying a new backpack, pay attention to its weight. Your carry on backpack should not use up too much of the weight allowance.

Traveling With A Large Backpack in Europe

Although we would recommend you to travel with a carry on bag even long term, there are times when it’s simply not possible. For others it just don’t work.

For instance, when you are going on a self supported hiking trip, a carry on friendly bag will be way to small. You’ll have to buy a larger backpack, such as the Osprey Aura or Atmos 65, or even larger one. On such a trip you’ll need to take a change of warm clothes, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent, and other camping gear, as well as food.

That’s why you’ll need a large backpack that can hold it all. Even if you choose ultralight backpacking gear.

Another case if you are traveling to countries of different climate zones. Meaning you have to pack warm clothing and footwear, as well as shorts and flip flops.

Train and bus baggage restrictions in Europe aren’t that strict.

When traveling by air with a large backpack, you can’t avoid baggage fees.

What about buses?

For example, if you are traveling with an Ecolines bus (a popular bus company in Europe) you are allowed to transport for free:

Hand baggage (up to 5 kg) and 3 items of luggage – the total volume of which is not more than baggage and the weight of each is up to 30 kg.

Local intercity bus companies can charge a small fee for luggage, and the restrictions on luggage aren’t strict.

For instance, in Latvia, to put a bag in an intercity bus luggage compartment costs only a couple of euros.

The Osprey Farpoint is a very durable and extremely well made backpack.

It’s one of my favorite travel backpacks. The backpack is both good for vacations and longer trips. Of course, the size of your backpack depends on your packing skills.

The Farpoint 40 is made of durable and water resistant ripstop material – 210D Nylon Mini Hex Diamond Ripstop.

One of the features I, personally, like the most about this backpack is that it’s front loading. This means that the backpack opens up just like a regular suitcase. There are two compression straps and a large zippered pocket in the main compartment.

One more thing that is cool – the main compartment is completely concealed. It’s hidden under a flap and secured with two 2 adjustable buckled straps at the front of the bag.

The backpack features another compartment. It has a laptop sleeve (up to 15.6”) and a zippered tablet pocket.

There’s a zippered scratch-free front pocket with a key fob and two mesh pockets.

The harness and hip belt of the Farpoint can be hidden away behind a flap.

The flap is zip-around and covers the harness and hip belt completely. When unzipped, it can be rolled all the way down and at the bottom of the back panel secured by a Velcro. This flap will protect the straps after the bag has been checked in or while in an overhead compartment of the aircraft.

There’s also a women-specific version of this bag – Osprey Fairview 40.

The Osprey Fairview’s backsystem is designed specifically for women. It’s slightly smaller and narrower, and it feels more comfortable on woman’s back than the Farpoint.

The bag has a roomy main compartment with a padded sleeve for your laptop (up to 15.6”) and another large compartment with additional inner pockets for organization and a tablet computer sleeve. There’s an easy access zippered pocket and a stash pocket perfect for storing extra layers. Then there are two small zippered pockets on the hip belt and two side mesh pockets.

If you don’t pack this backpack too full, you’ll have no problems bringing it on board as a carry on luggage.

The OutdoorMaster backpack comes with a waterproof rain cover, which you can hide in a dedicated pocket.
