We absolutely love traveling with our kids. In fact we wish we could travel with them some more! We’re hoping to travel to Cairns and Melbourne next year and Japan the year after. But what on earth do you pack to keep your kids busy when you’re on the road or flying across the country?
I’m often receiving emails from my readers asking for busy bag and activity ideas for when you’re on holidays and have limited space….so today I’m sharing a few of our favourites!
One of our favourite holiday play ideas are portable small worlds. We bought some GLIS containers from IKEA for $7 each and grabbed a few. I put together some sweet little small world kits which we keep packed in our cupboard all the time. Then when we want to go out for a nice dinner or go away on holidays, we can just grab one and go without having to think about what to take with us.
The first container has a gorgeous felt mat from Melanie Shanks* as well as her wooden trees and peg people. Then I also added a Rainforest Toob, some wooden loose parts, pebbles and some of our DIY trees!
The second container includes some loose parts from nature, bamboo, wooden disks, pebbles and some little insects from Kmart. I also added some mossy pebbles, artificial plants and another one of our DIY trees.
We also love to shop the aisles at places like Kmart searching for little bits and pieces that we can pack into small bags. When looking for activities, we want them to be light and easily used independently by our little learners.
Earlier this year we went camping and packed a little foldable table, some art and craft supplies, some little insect toys and a few busy bags.
The see through busy bags are pencil cases from Amazon* which are perfect for busy bags! They’re permanently packed in our cupboard so they can be grabbed at a moments notice as well.

Now what if you are looking for a done-for-you option where someone else takes care of the hard work for you? Well my friends at Very Busy Bag can help you out! They put together the most amazing busy bags for a variety of ages and they come in the sweetest drawstring bag. In fact the bags are so fabulous that we pack them over and over with our own activities when we we go on holidays!
We’ve used the Very Busy Bags on two holidays with our little learners now and they are such an amazing idea. You can even order refills so once your little learners go through the original activities, you can easily add more. We all love the little water magic notebooks from Melissa and Doug which often feature in the Very Busy Bag sets!
I hope this post has given you some ideas for your next holiday! If you’d like some ideas for a specific age, just comment below and I’ll share some ideas, or grab a copy of my eBook below!
