How to Find the Best Packable Down Jacket For Yourself?
How to find the best women’s packable down jacket for your needs?
Let’s make this super simple.
Generally speaking it’s mostly about these 4 simple things.
1. Warmth
How to find a really warm packable jacket?
Filling power is a measurement of down quality. The higher the number, the fluffier the down and therefore it offers greater warmth. Cheaper jackets use mixed filling of down and synthetic fibers or feathers. For the maximum warmth with minimum bulk look for 100% down jacket with higher filling power.
Features like elastic cuffs, bottom drawstrings and wind blocking hoods are also great things to have. By blocking the wind and keeping the heat in, they allow you to stay warm and feel more comfortable longer.
2. Length
Packable down jackets come in different lengths.
If you will be wearing this jacket in windy or extra cold weather you may want to pay attention to how far the bottom of the jacket goes. Some jackets even have lengthened back to cover the essential parts of the body, and to give you more warmth as a result. However, if you are just looking for a jacket to drop in your travel bag, just in case, a shorter jacket will do.
And it’s easier to move around in a shorter jacket too.
3. Weather Protection
How about rain and wind protection?
Overall, down blocks wind on its own. But some jackets are designed specially for rain, wind and snow. Special materials can be used for the outer layer and inner lining to make the winter jacket warmer or water and wind resistant. For rain protection, look for a jacket with water resistant coating.
To have a hood is also an option, but it takes some bag space too. After all, you can always combine your packable jacket with a wide brim hat for rain or a winter beanie for snowy weather. You don’t necessarily need a hood.
4. Packability
All lightweight packable jackets pack small, but not all are the same.
Some jackets have a special pouch that you can use to pack the jacket in which is handy for light travel. Others have the option to fold it into its own inner pocket which is even more convenient, as just don’t have a pouch that you may lose. And then there are jackets that neither pack into a pocket, nor have a dedicated pouch for carrying, but you can still pack them small and put in your bag.
If you prefer to be organized (like me) then a jacket with a pouch or a jacket that is foldable into the inner pocket will be the best choice for you.
What is your experience with down jackets? Do you use one for hiking? What’s the best packable down jacket you have tried so far?
