Florence, Italy

Florence was once a hub for medieval European trade and is now home to nearly a third of the world’s great art treasures. The historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an abundance of art galleries, museums, and monuments. In addition to this cultural and architectural heritage, the city is also well known for fashion.

Millions of tourists visit Florence each year to explore the art, history, and food. Crowds and long lines are common at popular sites like the Duomo (cathedral) and Uffizi Gallery during peak season, so it’s best to get an early start.

Why We Went

We flew into Florence at the start of our month-long stay in Italy. Since I did a study abroad summer program in Florence, I was eager for my husband to see it and revisit some of my favorite spots.

We stayed three nights at a tiny but central Airbnb apartment. We explored exclusively by foot, including a guided half-day walking tour about Florentine Street Food. Among the highlights were the fresh pasta from San Lorenzo market and the artisanal gelato, which we could not get enough of!
