Ninh Binh, Vietnam

Ninh Binh is a rural town, just two hours from the capitol city of Hanoi by train or bus. Its natural beauty and historic significance has made it increasingly popular for tourism. While the majestic karsts in the waters of Ha Long Bay are more well known, many call Ninh Binh “the Ha Long Bay on land.”

The main attractions in Ninh Binh are boat rides through the caves and hidden temples along the river, the area’s largest Buddhist temple complex, and the country’s ancient capitol ruins.

Why We Went

My husband and I spent two months in one of our favorite places, Hoi An, Vietnam, this year. We decided to add one more destination in Vietnam to our trip before moving on to a different part of the world. We were intrigued by Ninh Binh’s natural beauty and the fact that it was less touristy than Ha Long Bay was also attractive.

We found a nice, modern homestay in one of the villages through Airbnb. With that as our home base for the week, we used the homestay’s bicycles to explore the different areas each day.
