Alright, so the main reason we don’t recommend attaches for everyone is because they are almost solely carried in the hand.
That can be great if you’ve got a shorter commute. They give a great professional look and you’ll have no problems with comfort.

So do you need real leather? Well, here are the main reasons we think it’s a good idea.
1. IT LASTS
The best reason to go with real leather is the enormous lifespan you’ll get.
To put it plainly, fake leather just can’t keep up.
PU leather or bonded leather is fake leather. Look out for descriptions of these when looking at leather bags. These faux leathers are usually made by bonding together scraps of lower hide leather. In some cases, they will look like real leather, but sadly they will rip or tear after just a short time.
Real quality leather such as full grain or top grain grades will be made from the very top layer of the animal hide. It’ll have all the long lasting properties that the animal hide had. Just think of how animal hides are made to withstand extreme conditions – snow, wind, even attacks from predators. Your attache case will be made to handle the same.
If you go for real leather, there’s no reason why your briefcase shouldn’t last for decades. It’ll beat off scratches with ease and any marks or blemishes will just add to the case’s character.

Yes, you should still have a main area where you can store all your files, folders and documents. The open area if you will.

What Size do I Need?
Size is a really important question in the leather attaché case world.
Whilst in the backpack or shoulder bag world, you’ll probably get away with just getting the biggest one, you won’t here. That’s because attaches are not designed to be carried over longer distances. They are designed for carrying within the hand. And when you combine that with how heavy real leather is, an overly large attache can quickly become cumbersome on commutes.
We recommend getting an attache that is perfect for your needs. Stay away from the thought that you’ll buy something bigger ‘just in case’.
Typically, something that’s made to comfortably fit A4 papers and folders will suffice. A 3.5″ width is usually sufficient for most. But if you’re looking to carry particularly thick folders or even a laptop a 4.5″ thickness is also acceptable. Some newer models even have expandable, push out bottoms so that you can easily go from 3.5″ to 4.5″ widths. We love this particular model for getting the most from size.
If you require a briefcase thicker than 4.5″ you may be better going for a softer briefcase with a shoulder strap.

What Color Should I Go For?
Typically, you’ll find a small range of acceptable professional colors available in the leather attache world.
Different shades of black leather attache cases, brown leather attache cases and even burgundy leather attache cases are most common.
If you’re looking for something made from full grain leather, your best option will be brown. This is because full grain leather has no processes applied. It’s direct from the animal onto the bag. That means it’s designed to last the longest, but also means dying processes are not recommended. As natural leather is most often a shade of brown, this is the color to go for.
If you want top grain leather, processes are permitted to buff out blemishes, but also to dye the leather. Black is a great option here as this color goes with all work outfits. It makes less of a classic statement that brown, but for some that’ll be just what you’re looking for – that understated look of quality.

2. STORE IT THOUGHTFULLY
If you’re not using your bag, be mindful of where you leave it. The worst thing you can do is leave it in a wet or damp storage area. If you have a basement that floods annually, this is pretty much as bad as it gets for storing real leather.
As leather is natural material, processes haven’t been applied to make it 100% water resistant. As it’s a natural hide, it’s even possible that prolonged exposure to damp can cause mold to grow.
We advise storing leather is a cool, dry place wherever possible.

WHAT IS AN ATTACHE CASE?
Leather attache cases are almost always hardbacked and cannot be bent into a different shapes like many other leather briefcases. This is so documents stay straight and any papers included will arrive in the same condition as you stored them. This is a unique feature among leather bags and why we recommend men’s attaché cases for those that need to transport papers, documents and other office supplies.

WHICH LEATHER TYPE IS BEST FOR AN ATTACHE CASE?
For leather attaches, we recommend only full grain leather and top grain leather. These are the very top layer of the animal hide. The top layer is the strongest and will last far longer than any other grain of leather. Full grain leather allows no chemical processes, but will have some imperfections/blemishes present as it’s completely natural. Top grain leather allows chemical processes to be used so the leather briefcase will appear to have a uniform pattern. We find top grain leather attaches are most popular as they show no signs of imperfection and are therefore more suited to professional settings.

HOW DO I LOOK AFTER MY attache?
Treating a real leather attache with care can extend its life by years.
We recommend the following to care for your item.
Always wash your hands before caring for leather – oil from your hands can easily transfer to leather hide.
Once a week, we recommend taking a soft, dry (or slightly damp) cloth and briskly sweeping the leather. Don’t forget the inside too! Use a cloth to wipe down the lining and remove any dirt or residue.
Use a good leather cream or conditioner once or twice per year to prevent your briefcase becoming dry or cracked. If you live in a dryer climate, you may need to do this more often. Simply apply the cream to the entire case with a cloth and rub off any excess. We recommend using this all natural leather cream for our cases.
Be sure to take the time to care properly for your leather. If you do, your case can have a good, long life.
CAN I GET IT MONOGRAMMED?
At this time, we do not provide monogramming or embossing services. However, all our attaches can be monogrammed by most leather working dealers. We recommend taking our cases to your local dealer for more information.
CAN I GET IT WET?
Wherever possible, avoid damp or moisture on your leather briefcase. We know this is not always possible, so if your case does get wet, here’s what you do.
If you spill something on it, blot away the moisture with a clean dry cloth as quickly as you’re able to.
Caught in a rainstorm? Be sure to let your case completely air dry and do not use a heat source to speed up the drying (this can damage the leather). Stuff the bag with newspaper to help the bag keep its shape and absorb moisture from the inside.
WILL MY case SMELL WHEN I GET IT?
As these bags are made from real leather, they are likely to emit a strong, natural leather smell when you first receive them. This will fade over time.
Should this smell not be to your liking, we recommend airing out your case in a cool, dry climate for 48 hours.
