Although we are huge fans of the Cambridge Satchel Company, and would like to congratulate them for their success in opening their first shop in Covent Garden a few months ago, here at JUNYUAN, we were a little confused with one of their more outlandish design ideas.

The clear (transparent – see through!) satchel, which is only available in their store, looks
 lovely when on the shelves, but what happens when the time comes to actually start using it? Most women, I assume, have similar rubbish in their bags as I do; half eaten sandwiches, food wrappers, tissues, gum and generally just things better off hidden from the public, not on full display.

 What use is a bag where you can’t actually carry anything that you might not want the world to see?

I thought I’d do a little experiment, and see how many of the things in my bag at the moment I could actually carry if using the see-through Cambridge Satchel when going about my day.

The first item in my bag was my iPod and headphones; my headphones are in a constant mess and I don’t think it would be a good idea for everyone on the train to know what I was listening to (it can be a little embarrassing!). Next was my inhaler and paracetamol; although Martin Scorsese, David Beckham and Bono are some of my fellow asthmatics, salbutamol definitely isn’t the world’s coolest accessory, and I find it hard to believe a half used packet of painkillers is either.

Next up was the collection of beauty products and accessories that I had no idea were at the bottom of my satchel – 2 hair bands, 3 hair clips, a pair of earrings, my mascara and concealer, a huge pot of Vaseline, an empty tube of hand cream and 3 different colours of lip-gloss; definitely not what I’d want the world to see. Then the miscellaneous objects; a pen, chewing gum, a sachet of sugar, a dummy (I am a mother you know), some sweet wrappers, tissues, mints, 3 coins (all of different currency) and finally, inexplicably, a pair of socks; all in all, not the most glamorous things to have on show to the world. In fact, I think I’ve established that were I to own a clear Cambridge Satchel, it could never leave my shelf, unless I managed to restrict myself to leaving the house with only my purse and phone with me.

By the way, it seems that Marc Jacobs did not want to be outdone and launched his own see through handbag recently. Â It is the really posh way to show the world what you have going on inside your most personal of possessions.Â
