Simply put, vegetable tanned (or veg tan as its called by some) means that while in the tannery, before arriving in our workshop, the hides are treated with plant-based dyes and oils, as opposed to chemicals.
In addition to being the most traditional and earth-friendly tanning method out there, vegetable tanned leather also tends to get better over time and develop a rich patina with use. As you wear and enjoy your Junyuan leather tote bag you will notice it darkening over the years, becoming truly unique to you. You know that Junyuan Leather Co. prioritized quality above all else, right? That’s because we believe in a more sustainable way of buying and enjoying fashion. We want our items to last a lifetime and be passed on through generations. Thus we made a few key decisions when it comes to the production of all our products that ensure top notch quality.
For starters, all our leather, cow or lamb (which is the case for our totes) is full-grain. To keep a long story short, full-grain leather is the outer layer or top-most layer of the hide which contains all of the natural and unique characteristics compiled throughout the animal’s lifetime – is the crème de la crème of leather grades!
Full-grain leather is no doubt the strongest and most durable as it leaves all of those tightly knit natural fibers intact during the tanning process. We also use top quality thread and sewing machines in the creation of our leather tote bags. You will notice that our larger tougher bags are hand stitched, but we opted for machine sewing when it came to our totes as it’s more delicate on the lamb leather and for design purposes, as it leaves a more discrete seam.
