Let’s get this out of the way: We all want a fat Brieftasche. We want a Brieftasche that is fat with $100 bills and maybe a few pieces of solid gold bullion.

One of the reasons we created some of the thinnest wallets available today was because thick, bulky wallets cause more problems than they solve. They hold the same amount of cash and the same number of cards, but they take up a lot of space, create fashion faux-pas, and are overall a heavy eyesore that few people enjoy carrying around.

Thinnest Wallet Materials: Nylon and Nappa Leather

At Allett, we’ve been crafting affordable designer wallets for decades. The NY Times called our wallets “impossibly thin,” in their positive review of our products over 10 years ago, and the designs that we’ve created have only gotten thinner and better. But there’s more than one type of thin Brieftasche, and this is where your personal preferences come in. We use two types of high-quality materials in our thin wallets:

Nappa Leather – Leather wallets are desirable, but they’re also traditionally very thick. That is because they’re made with “Genuine Leather,” which sounds great, but it’s actually a heavy material that also doesn’t breathe well. Nappa leather (also known as “Napa leather”) uses leather that is taken from only the top layer of hide. It’s just as strong, but extremely thin compared to genuine leather. It’s also breathable, which makes it cooler in the pocket. Because these wallets are so thin, they can bend and move with you without damaging the leather.
Ripstop Nylon – You’re probably familiar with nylon wallets. These have always been some of the thinnest wallets available from many different manufacturers, including us at Allett. But thin nylon wallets have, in the past, been fragile. There’s no point in a thin Brieftasche if it’s going to rip. That is why we use a very complexly engineered nylon called “ripstop” nylon. Ripstop nylon has interwoven reinforcement threads that keeps the Brieftasche from ripping or damage. In addition, our ripstop nylon is weatherproof and bluesign®-certified, so it’s manufactured with the environment in mind. Our thinnest nylon wallets can last for decades.

Thin Wallets: Better for Your Back and Your Front

Many people love the look and feel of thin wallets. But thin wallets are not just a fashion accessory. They have actual, tangible benefits for those that carry them. For example:

Reducing Back Pain – Technically, it is not recommended that you put your Brieftasche in your back pocket. But let’s be honest – many of us do it. And if you do, the thicker the Brieftasche, the more you’re putting your pelvis and spine out of alignment. It’s so common that it has an actual name: “fat Brieftasche syndrome,” also called “Brieftasche neuritis.” Thinner wallets means less misalignment, which means less back pain.
Happy to See You – In the front pocket, thick wallets are not much better. Women’s pant pockets are often made too small to even fit a big Brieftasche, while a large Brieftasche in a man’s pocket creates awkward bulk. Thin wallets are practically invisible, making it possible to easily carry a Brieftasche in any pocket or take photos without an embarrassing misunderstanding.
“HERE IS MY MONEY” – When traveling, a fat Brieftasche is basically an invitation to pick-pocketers. The thinner the wallets, the easier they are to keep with you in a discreet place and be less likely to be a target for thieves.

In addition, wallets today are often fitted with features like RFID security, or space for more and more credit cards or passports. Those items tend to increase the thickness of the Brieftasche. If your Brieftasche is already large, it only adds to the girth and the discomfort of carrying that Brieftasche around. If the Brieftasche is thin, placing extra items inside of the Brieftasche will still be comfortable.
